1994 Sam Adams Triple Bock

I bought this bottle back in 95 or 96. I had planned on keeping for a while, and after I tasted some fresh Triple Bock, I planned on keeping it longer. I was married in 94, so I decided to drink it in ten years. Well I forgot about it until 2005.

I drank this at cellar temp. (about 55F) in a brandy snifter. The beer had no carbonation. It poured a cloudy, reddish brown with lots of particles (I'm not sure if this is bottle conditioned). It had a nice nose with lots of malt and alcohol. It had some legs on the glass. The soy sauce taste of fresh Triple Bock had mellowed into a more of a molasses type of flavor. I can't say I was that impressed. I had to struggle through it.

I enjoy a high gravity beer (I had an EKU28 last year that was outstanding), but this wasn't really my cup of meat. I read someone (maybe Bryson) say something about not buying into the claim that a beer is "port-like". I agree, if I want some port, I'll buy some port.

If any beer approaches port-likeness, its Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout. Not as straightforwardly sweet like port but getting there. Yea, the SATB just has lots of really weird flavors that don't really work well together.
