2001 Bigfoot

Tonight I wanted to drink something special to celebrate my 50th birthday and decided on a 2001 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. Wow! I've managed to save 7 bottles out of the first case of this that I bought back in February 2001 and now wish I had save more. This beer is delicious fresh but it greatly improves with age, more mellow, sort of reminds me of a Thomas Hardy. Starting this year I'll be buying two cases, one to drink and one to cellar.

Has there been any 2005 Bigfoot sightings yet?

It does age quite nicely I think it peaks between 2 and 3 years old. I just picked up my first six of the 2005 and I'm probably going to have to break out the 6 year vertical this weekend and see how everything is holding up.

Hey, it's gettin' to be that time of year again, isn't it? Looks like the very end of January was when it started showing up last year.

Did I five-year vertical last year and the 3 year old was definitely the best. The five was definitely past its prime.

We did a 12 year vertical, and there was actually a weird second peak at 8 years. Or maybe not: the guys at SN avoid verticals. They say that they do their best on bottling (and they do a LOT), but that individual bottles still age quite differently. Would think you'd need at least a five-bottle sample from different lots in each year over ten years to really tell where any peaking was taking place. Any volunteers?

If you've got the beer, I've got the time. Beer after beer.

Cool! You've got that much aged Bigfoot? Shoot me a MapQuest URL, I'll be right over.

Sure, no problem. Go here, preferably really late at night. Oh, and to make you easier to spot, wear a white sheet and white hood and be holding a large stack of cash. I'll be right there. I promise.

I've done numerous verticals over the years, but IMO nothing ever beats year 0. Bigfoot ages OK, but everything that makes it stand out from the crowd in the first place (namely, HOPS) is gone by the time it's a year old. Drink up.

I cracked a bottle from 2002 the other night and though much the same thing. I like it fresh, but after a year or two, it becomes a lot more balanced. I always hold some bottles to stash in the cellar.

Picked up some just a bit ago at Hi Times in Costa Mesa. Haven't cracked one open yet. But this year's Bigfoot is officially out in the wild.
