Anheuser World Select

Well, I saw Anheuser World Select on sale at Binnys in Chicago. It featured nice packaging albeit in a green bottle. They were selling it for 7.99! (For comparison, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was 7.49.) I didn't try it, and am not likely to, but I was interested in hearing if any of you have. My guess is that it's a good enough clone of a northern Euro Lager.

I knew they were going for the image-conscious crowd, but I was still surprised by the price.

Being that I have no image, I settled on some Bell's tTwo Hearted. . . yum.

Great. Make someone else jump on that grenade ;~). I bought a single bottle at BevMo. After all, it was created by their best brewmasters from around the world so it must be a quality product. Yeah right. It has a slight amount more character than Bud, a little more malt, a little more bitterness and litter more hop profile in the middle, basically it reminded me of a ny number of Dutch $3.99 a sixer lagers that you can get at Trader Joes (Three Horses, Peter's Beer, etc.). A nice "lawnmowing beer" as my friends says about the Dutch lagers, but at $7.99 a six it would be just as cheap to hire someone to cut the lawn for you.

I have to grudgingly admit it doesn't completely suck. I thought it compared very well to the usual bland Eurolager, which is its target. I'll never buy it again but, if I were offered a choice between it and Heineken, the World Select would be the one I'd go for.

I had it on draft at a Seafood Festival a couple weeks ago when it was 85 in Florida, and it wasn't bad... tried it in a bottle a couple days later and it wasn't all that great. It's one of those beers where if it is served ice cold and it's hot outside it's ok. Would I pay 7.99 for a 6-pack?no... would I pay $1 for a cold draft on a hot day in Florida? yeah- if my only choices are Bud products.

My reaction to "World Select"... "Eew, somebody poured Bud in my Heinekin!"

LOL! And they ended up making a beer even worse than either of those two!

Considering my retracted second line was "Eew... I'm drinking a Heinekin!"... I don't see how!

p.s. Although H. beats Bud (unless it's the Czech version) any and all of the time!
