Bear Republic Racer 5

It's been a couple years since I had this last and wow, that's one tasty sob of an IPA. I think the best part is the long lasting aftertaste but that's probably just me.

In comparison, Grant's Hopzilla is, well, kind of ordinary and one dimensional. Kind of reminds me of a hopped up Redhook IPA.

I ended up getting only one bottle of BR's Hop Rod Rye(:^( ) so I'll probably save that until Sunday.

The Westmalle triple and St. Bernardus abt 12....I'm gonna have to play it by ear and "feel" when the moment's right. ;^)

Best regards, Bill

There are so many great IPA's available up here in the Northwest that are IMO equal or better than BR (Although I though BR was great too). Just last weekend I had the following that would compare to BR:

Pelican IPA Snipes Mountain IPA (this brewery has really improved A LOT!) Great Divide IPA Terminal Gravity IPA

Also tried the Bear Republic Stout, which I was looking forward to since it's been talked about favoralby on this group. Unfortunately, mine was too fizzy and masked most of the flavor. I had to let it sit for a while to enjoy it. It was quite good, though I like Shakesphere better (more complex and not so fizzy). Pelican used to bottle an amazing stout called Tsunami Stout, but they stopped sometime last year. Very sad.

I'll tell ya, having Bridgeport IPA available here would make me a happy camper. I know some think that it's nothing special anymore but I still fancy it.

Shakespeare is the best stout in my town with Zonker from Snake River pulling in a respectable 2nd.

Btw, just to get away from IPAs for a moment, I just popped the cap on the Westmalle Triple and took a small sip(had to wait for the foam to settle down). Damn. That flavour kicks major ASS!!! Funny thing...it's got a "collar" on the bottle just like New Belgium. Also, it says it contains 11.2 oz but yet, it's taller and wider in girth than a NB bottle. Wassupwiththat? lol

I hear ya.

I think you have the cart before the horse on that one.

I haven't noticed that one. I have noticed that shapes can be deceiving, e.g., some taller bottles can be smaller if the neck shape is different. But for the difference you're talking about I think hefting the bottles would reveal a difference that could account for 0.8 ounces.

Yeah, I kind of figured that. lol

I'm going to have to get some of each and test drive them again... a head to head comparison. I don't remember being all that impressed with the Redhook, but I may have tried it long ago.

I liked the taste, but thought it had too much head. May just have been the bottle I had, I haven't had any since May.

Sounds like my experience with "Hop Rod Ale." It had too much head, and the bubbles were ugly, not smooth little bubbles, but big bubbles typical of bad storage.
