Beer mug design.

A friend and I were having a conversation and, as always, the conversation found itself approaching something obscure.

This time it went to the design of the beer mug. Specifically, we discussed why beer mugs are "indented" on the under side of the glass.

We discussed it being due to the possibility of keeping condensation from making the glass stick to the bar, but that would be solvable with something less dramatic. We also tossed around the idea of freezing water to the bottom, but felt that would just make a mess as it melted or would prove useless after the ice fell out. Could it be a sales ploy to make it look like you get more beer?

Believe it or not, I can not find a website that discusses this although I have found a few good site that discuss different shape glasses for different types of beer (so I did learn something).

Would you be so kind and post the link to a good website on glass shape? TIA and good luck with your search!

Prost,

Bastian, I still have had no luck in finding any discussion about the bottom of mugs and why they are indented. Maybe I have overlooked it, but like I said I have some other sites that are useful in picking the proper glass for a beer.
