BJ's Brewhouse?

Funny, but in the L.A. area, there is a fairly pitiful selection of microbreweries (unless someone straightens me out here).. I must admit I enjoy a few of the selections at BJ's Brewhouse (no i do not work for them)..An excellent Imperial Stout, very chocolaty, a nice Red ale, a fab light porter..And NO FIZZ in the glass! How freaking un-American is that? I forgot that some people actually know how to make beer in this country, go figure..As mentioned, seems like slim pickins in these here parts. suggestions always welcome, tanks,c

The Mediterraneo, on the Pier Plaza in Hermosa Beach, has some decent beers (see here:

although this does not appear to be a complete list. Last time I was there I had Ommagang's Three Philosophers, but it's not on the list.) Plus the tapas are excellent.

While they're not microbreweries, you can get a good selection at the Goat Hill Tavern down in Costa Mesa and I've also heard good things about a place in Santa Monica called My Father's Office. As far as microbreweries go, there's Stone Brewing down in San Diego, whose beer is available all over LA. That's all I know of in the area but then again I'm 2500 miles away, surely there's someone lurking around here who can provide more information than I have.

Breweries in LA? Not many at all that I know of, but if you wanna try a bunch of great beers on tap, visit:

1.) Naja's near the pier at Redondo Beach. Actually it's right on the docks. Trust me on this. Some GREAT beers there. They probably have at least 100 beers on tap, and tons more in bottles. Ask for Jason and tell him what types of beers you're into and he'll trot out all kinds of things you've maybe never even heard of and you can sample. 2.) Lucky Baldwin's in Pasadena on Colorado in the old town section. They just had an IPA festival. 3.) Not a humongous selection, but a cozy little place to drink good beer: The Library Ale House in Santa Monica. They have about 15-20 beers on tap. Lots of beautiful and intelligent people 21-40 in there.

There are a few other places in LA, too.

Not really much going on for breweries here, other than Craftsman. Some decent brewpubs scattered about, but not a lot for a city of this size. But, there are definitely places to find good beer. Read on ...

Actually just Father's Office. On Montana, near 10th, in Santa Monica. Great place, but tiny and gets very crowded very quickly.

Goat Hill exists and has a big selection, but quality is all over the map. I'd rather drink at the Yard House more or less across the street.

As you mentioned, lots of Stone around, and not too hard to find Alesmith and Bayhawk (a couple other San Diego breweries) in bottle shops.

For bars, the best bets are the aforementioned Father's Office, Lucky Baldwin's in Pasadena and Cafe Boogaloo in Hermosa Beach. Belmont Brewing Co. in Long Beach is a good brewpub, nothing that's going to to knock your socks off but consistently good. There's a branch or two of San Diego-based Oggi's in Orange County, there's Naja's on the pier in Redondo Beach, there's good German beer at the Red Lion in Silver Lake (or other German cafes in Torrance and Huntington Beach), the Abbey in Seal Beach, the (surprisingly good) hotel bar at the Four Points Sheraton LAX, etc. It's actually not that tough to find good beer in LA; you just need to know where to look.

The definitive place for beers in L.A. area is the Stuffed Sandwich in San Gabriel......Only 6 taps but he sells 700 bottle brands and the food is good....

My brother told me about this place recently. He heard about it, and it sounded unlikely, but he went in one day and was totally blown away by what a complete beer connoissseur the sandwich shop owner was, a quiet, seemingly very shy guy. It's true. Try it. I wish I could, but now I live in No CA.

Has anyone tried the Smoked beer at the Craftsman Brewing Company in Pasadena?

Angel City? Certainly unfabulous, but...

Are the vestiges of the Brew 102 mural still visible? Haven't been up that way in a while...

My Father's Office is an early (original?) name and remains the common name among locals. Hip, I suppose. Especially given the clientele. There's a place in HB called My Place. Same concept, I suppose.

ObIwasbornandraisedinSantaMonicaandyoupeopleallsuck: One used to be able (~1988) to order a beer from the really- great-big-fellow at MFA and then cruise over to the adjoining barber shop and get one's hair cut while enjoying, say, an Olden Foggy (The really-great-big-fellow claimed, and made a convincing argument for, having the very first ever Old Foghorn on tap ever period.)

The barber shop is still there, but no longer adjoining. And the barbers worked around your beer ("Hold it way out right.")

An understatement. A victim of it's own (fairly recent) success. A Cheese Platter and/or a Tossed Salad used to be your choices. Both were worth having, but that was it. But now they make a damn fine burger, other sandwiches, the fries are excellent, etc.

Clientele is young and probably falls into two categories:

a) Old money. b) Still living at home.

If you hate Yuppie Bars, this place will kill you instantly.

The Goat Hill Tavern simply sucks. The selection is seemingly huge, and yet...try to send a bad beer back (fully one in five - Give it a whirl. They don't 'get' "This is in bad shape." They get pissed off, give you another beer, and you better enjoy it because that's your last beer.)

The decor and the patrons are Frathouse. The service is 'you're not a regular, I'll get to you when I feel like it.'

Fuck that place.

It is literally right across the street.

All good recommendations.
