Carlsberg's Elephant Malt Liquor

I'll Drive 100 miles for a sixer of this Carlsberg product. Haven't had it for some years. Miss it. My favorite ever (and I've tasted many). To me it outshines as one of the finest tasting, smoothest, full bodied brews (obviously with a good kick). It goes down so light and easy you wouldn't think it was a malt liquor. But try & pass your own field test after a sixpack of this!

Anybody else out there appreicate this one? I'm located north of Sacramento CA. Know how or where I can find Elephant?

Ken

Is this the same as Carlsberg Elephant beer?

With gas at $2 a gallon? Geez, if it was "favorite ever" I think I'd pick up a case or two...

20+ years ago it was a favorite of mine, but the beer market and beer availability has changed a bit (understatement) since. Haven't had it in years and IIRC aren't all the Carlsberg beer available in the US now contract brewed in Canada? There's no logical reason why they can't contract brew a beer to the same standards as the home brewery BUT they almost never do- probably saving money and/or trying to appeal to some industry concept of the "American taste". Have never heard anything good about contract-brewed Carlberg (or Guinness or Fosters or Whitbread, or Mackeson, or fill-in-the-blank....)

Is THAT what happened to them!?

I too used to knock back a couple of these every day after work. Great way to shake off workday tensions. When I first discovered them, they were great. After a couple years something happened and all of a sudden they sucked. It was all I could do to gag down a single one. I quit drinking them altogether. Pity. But, they are still around. Not like they used to, though. I guess everyone else noticed the change, too.

IIRC, for a time Anheuser-Busch had the importation rights to the Carlsberg brand and for a time they were actually bringing in containers of bulk beer and bottling it at an A-B plant (Newark, again IIRC). This was their lager but it seems to me the Elephant was dumbed down around the same time.

Usually around this time in any Carlsberg thread someone asks about Tuborg, which was once imported by Rheingold but then became a contract brew for National, then Carling-National, then Heileman and then sort of disappeared. Seems it has returned to the states as an import, but where it's brewed I can't say. I see they make it in Bulgaria, now, for one...

I also liked the Elephant when I was living in So. Cal back in the 70's.

Haven't had it

It's here in Casper. I tried a 6er about a year ago. Bleh.

Have never heard anything

Actually, I liked the Coors brewed Castlemaine that was available back in the 90's. But that was just me. ;^)

Best regards, Bill

Would there be more than one Carlsberg Elephant (Malt Liquor?) beer? Maybe they gave up on Malt Liquor Elephant and turned to Elephant beer? Like I said, I haven't enjoyed this for some years.
