Clara

I drank clara in Barcelona a bit back at a tapas bar. It was wonderful and while I'm sure it won't appeal to purists, it was refreshing and delicious and I loved it. I don't know if what I drank came out of a tap or a bottle, but I was shown a bottle that listed the ingredients as

60% beet, 30% lemon juice, and 10% lime juice.

Have any of you ever made it? Anything special I should know if I try it? Does anyone know if it is available (bottled) in the states, MN specifically?

Thanks for your kindness.

I think you're having beet withdrawal hallucinations, Barb. ;)

I've searched and searched and found nothing like you describe. I'm not even sure why your are addressing this query to alt.beer, unless you've run across one of the definitions of clara that describes it as beer plus 7up or some other soda (ginger ale, etc). Regardless, beet, lime, and lemon in no way qualifies as beer even by the furthest stretch of the definition. Even the Belgians haven't taken beer that far.

Are you sure the Spanish weren't putting you on? Clara in the Spanish means clear. Hardly a condition one is like to find in a liquid made of 60% beet juice. As much as I'd love to help, and as much as I love both beer and beets, I've yet to hear of the two ever meeting in the same beverage. I like the idea, though. I'll run it buy my brewing mentor.

In the meantime, I suggest a good malty IPA, some pickled beets, and a good queso de Cabrales to munch while perusing this Spanish food dictionary webpage:
