Go to a homebrew supply store. Ask how to get started.

The homebrew suppliers I've dealt with have been honest people. They're not interested in jerking off the customer to make a quick buck; they want people to learn and enjoy the craft of making beer at home, in the hope that such people will become return customers.

For the most part that's true. However, I've experienced a few that only seem to want to sell high-margin beginner kits. They're easy for the experienced brewer to spot, but that doesn't help your average beginner. The best way to start brewing is to find a few people who already brew. Talk to them, check out their setups, find out what they think of various suppliers, etc. One of the best ways to find a few people who already brew is to find a local homebrew club. You can start at the AHA's web site .
