Probably dates from the days when brewers brewed beer and put it in kegs and bottlers bottled beer (bottled beer being a very small segment of the total sales and bottling lines being capital intensive). Brands like Guinness (and Bass), which were shipped all over the world, had numerous bottlers, often with their own labels (or neck labels or secondary rear labels)- thus the reference to "Note the yellow label".

When brewers (probably over both quality and financial reasons) began to do their own bottling, they usually played it up on their labels, thus terminology that still exists today: "Brewed and bottled by....".

The thread got me interested in the subject, and a quick Googlin' turns up:

All very good points.

I ASSumed the "yellow label" reference was to the export. Maybe it was an original source of that (current) label?

Yeah. Been there. I guess that like Pubcrawler it's not really a great big hairy pain in the buttoxial region, but, well, I just don't like having to "register".

Nah, it's worse that than. "Membership" is free, "FULL Membership" costs... and to even find out how much, you have to register first. (I'm not that interested to go much further. Just bought a six pack of O'Hara's Stout- nice stuff. No need for Guinness/Diago...).
