Help? Canada & good beer.

Hi folks, my brother & sis-in-law are visiting family & touring Canada for a couple of weeks in December & want to try to find some of the best beer-bars & brewpubs on the way.

I have a couple of books, incl a brewpub cookbook by Stephen Beaumont, but they are a bit out of date.

They are traveling by train for a big part of the journey & will stop at Vancouver, Victoria, Jasper, Winnipeg, Toronto, Halifax & Montreal. I'm not sure how long in each, but enough for a beer :~)

I've got some good advice from the brewtheren over on rfdb, but if anyone here has anything to add, 'twould be muchly appreciated. cheers, Mike McG, nr Liverpool, UK. replies here, or email - mic(underscore)mac(at)postmaster(dot)co(dot)uk (the deja/google email is long deceased)

  • If you listed the beers you've already been told about, it would help. ;^) Btw, I'm sure there's a slew of good beers in Canada but my favs to date are the offerings of Unibroue.

Best regards, Bill

I really liked the Steamworks Brewpub in Gastown (Vancouver), and also the Yaletown brewpub. Granville Island Brewery is pretty conservative, but clean. Nothing really special there. I had visited Fogg and Suds several years back and they had a good selection of local beers, but they are not a brew pub. I've heard good things about Spinnakers in Victoria and Longwood somewhere north of Victoria. Both Vancouver and Victoria have quite a few options, just haven't had time to visit them all. Maybe you can visit Victoria during the real ales festival there.

Speaking of Beaumont, he is a partner in Beerbistro, which opened last November (yep, been open a year) in Toronto. Lots of beers on offer.

You've already received a fair bit of good advice on brewpubs in Vancouver and Victoria; the only thing I'd add is a visit to the huge, rambling Sticky Wicket pub in Victoria's Strathcona Hotel.

Also worth a visit is Christie's Carriage House.

There's an extensive range of local beers on tap.

If your visiting family will be driving a rental/hire car, they can drive from Vancouver to Squamish to check out the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company. It's about 45 minutes by car from Vancouver.

Probably wouldn't have hurt to cross-post this, so replies showed up on both newsgroups. Why not?

Check out beertowel.com for a report on their recent trip to Victoria and other information on Montreal and Toronto.

Just returned from Victoria last week. I really enjoyed a brewpub called Canoe. Beautiful place, great food and service.

Visited the Sticky Wicket. Big friendly place with the usual suspects on tap, same goes for Darcy's Pub on Wharf Street.

Do not miss The Irish Times on Government St. Lots of beers on tap, and a very beautiful bar, not to mention some extremely lovely barmaids.

Also, when in Toronto do try Creemore Springs lager, especially at The Duke of York on Prince Arthur Avenue.

oh, I was asking the same question in 4 different ngs & I know some people get pi**ed off with x-posting, but yeah it seems to be more accepted between rfdb & alt.beer.

Thanks to all folks who responded - with the recommendations & web-links it seems like they've got enough to be going on with :~) cheers MikeMcG
