The "ale" thing on Ice Beers is due to state regulations due to the alcohol content: Some states have it called ale, some beer. Some have alc by volume, some by weight. When Ice beers first became popular, Pennsylvania didn't allow the alcohol to be listed at all. Great for us beer can collectors, but required 5 different labels for each brand (assuming it was a brand available nationwide). It's also interesting that, depending where purchased, Lowenbrau Oktoberest is labeled Malt Liquor and Paulaner Oktoberfest is laebeled Ale.
