What exactly is that mediciny taste I experience with most of the Belgian Ales I've tried? TIA for any help.

Phenols. They contribute all sorts of flavors, including medicinal and herbal/spicy. Phenols give a vaguely clove-like flavor to German wheat beers, and a vague hint of medicinal character to some Belgian ales.

and a vague hint of medicinal character to some Belgian

Thanks kind sir. Another question, if you will. Do the phenols gain strength as the beer gets older? I seem to remember fresh samples of Chimay Blue having almost no mediciny flavour while older samples abound in it.
