In the glass tonight Weltenburger....

What's in the glass tonight?

I found 500ml of Weltenburger Kloster hefe-weizen dunkel for a $1.50.

Not bad!

With a beer like that, I don't think you have much to complain about, even with the lack of inexpensive Weltenburger Hefeweizen around. I very much like La Folie, easily the most distinctive beer from NB.

Great stuff, that.

One my students just returned from a visit home in Wisconsin and brought me back a mixed sixer of Capital stuff!

I think I'll go for the Munich Dark to start things off tonight.

What style is the La Folie? I recently got to F> One my students just returned from a visit home in Wisconsin

What all was included?

The best Capital beers (IMHO) are the two doppelbocks (Blonde and Dark), the Kloster Weizen, and their Dunkel Weizen, which shows up VERY rarely here in IL.

As for me, I had was drinking Jenlain Biere De Noel last night, and Left Hand Brewing Imperial Stout tonight. I was drinking slow last night, but quicker tonight, so I might have a second beer, but I'm not sure what, just yet...

PS - has anyone in Chicagoland or thereabouts seen the Lammin Kataja Olut or Sahti???

It's a Flemish-style red ale, aged in oak. Not coin- cidentally, New Belgium's brewmaster worked at the Rodenbach brewery. See for further info.

Last night I had a Bourbon County Stout (Goose Island). I'm not a huge fan of bourbon-barrel beer, but this one had the complexity to stand up to the not-overpowering bourbon character.

Had a Dark Dopplebock last night. I'm typically very impresed by Capital. Lots of good stuff there. --

That's a flemish sour ale right? Very hard to find. We get almost all their stuff here in KS, but no La Folie.

Last night sampled the: Capital Bavarian Lager: 2 thumbs up, a dead on helles Capital Wisconsin Amber: fairly pedestrian Capital Munich Dark: sublime

tonight will get into: Capital Kloster Weizen Capital 1900 Capital Special Pilsner.

I've previously had the dark doppel, autumnal fire, and festbier. All were great.

NB claims that you can only get La Folie straight from the brewery but....;^)

I'm gonna pick up the remaining stock in town tomorrow. Should be about 5 or

6 bottles, I reckon.

Had a La Folie with dinner tonight, something out of Ruth van Waerebeek's "Everyone Eats Well in Belgium" cookbook that I kind of jiggered. It was a small pork loin, slathered in whole grain mustard and butter and roasted with pearl onions in the pan. When it's done, you take the roast out and de-glaze the pan with water and add 3 tablespoons of tarragon vinegar with cornstarch to the drippings and water and onions to make a sauce. I didn't have any tarragon vinegar, but I WAS making her apples baked with berries for dessert, so I mixed equal amounts of peach-infused, pear-infused, and raspberry-infused balsamic vinegar with the cornstarch. That sauce effin' rocked, and I served it all up with La Folie. I'm a pretty decent cook, but this was the first thing I've cooked in a while that I would have happily paid $20 for in a restaurant, and the La Folie was beautiful with it.

It's freaking beautiful stuff, and New Belgium needs to build a brewery near my house so I can get some.

Why? Does it not befit the style, do you not like the style, or does it just not taste good to you?

I like... It wouldn't be against my religion to send something local back your way either. :-)

How about a plain I don't know? I don't recall having had a Belgian(style) seasonal before. Maybe it's just going to take me some time getting used to. Wouldn't be the first time. lol

Well then, let's see what I can do.
