Is Munich turning into a beer desert?

To be sure I understand the difference. But given the absurdity of the OP's subject, I thought some humor might make the post a little more interesting. There is some fine german beer to be found in that city...all one has to do is to visit the city and try it.

One could make an equally incorrect statement about Austrian beer. There really isn't all that much that makes it to the U.S. But go there and it's beer heaven folks.

Point well taken ... I agree wholeheartedly. Not just in the city either; the S-Bahns get you to plenty of great places too.

Yes and no. I've had some excellent beer in Austria; I've also had infected junk from a brewpub. The owner was a nice guy and enthusiastic, the pub itself was nice, but his brewing technique obviously needed work. But I tasted some fresh-from-the- conditioning-tank beer at Ottakringer too, and damn if Braumeister Andreas Rosa isn't concocting some excellent beer out there. They're concocting some good stuff in Austria, and there's a refreshing open-mindedness towards beer that is still lacking in much of Germany.

feel compelled to point out that Usenet is by definition a seven bit ascii medium and you have broken the rules with verboten character codes. Nyaah nyaah.

Well, I'll leave aside the point that you're posting with software that's circumventing correct attribution of your post. :-)

But I will point out that I refuse to accede to the xenophobic, English-favoring rubric of Usenet and spell foreign words the way they're inteded to be spelled. (Also deserving of one of those smiley faces, which I detest but feel compelled to insert in this post.)

Augustiner Helles was back to its previous standard yesterday (Sunday) in the Augustiner Am Dom (beer from the barrel) so I am hopeful the brew went through a bad phase due to the extra demand placed on it by the Oktoberfest and it will now rapidly return to normal.

Yes, get outside the city a bit...lots of good tasting beer to be found.

Brewpubs are in my experience a mixed bag at best, no matter the country. They can produce some fine tasting beer that doesn't get any fresher and tie it with some decent pub food. Old Dominion being my favorite good example. And there are the many others that would be better off buying half a dozen house brews from a good brewer and just focusing on the food.

They are fun places to visit and the tanks certainly look impressive.

As I live in Munich, I'd be interested in your recommendations of S-bahn trips to good beer outlets or even Bayern trips using the Bayern ticket, especially if the beer were from the barrel. The only places I know of for good beer are Tegernsee, Salzburg and Bamberg.

Try Scheider, Kelheim; Kneitinger, Regensberg; Kloster, Andechs

Jeez... Get yourself to Aying. Closer than Salzburg and Bamberg to Munich (not sure about Tegernsee, but probably closer than that too), and DAMN tasty.

Reminds me of a question... If one were to go during Starkbierzeit, would one just find good/stark bier everywhere, or are there actually festivals and/or sites to visit? I've never been, but the lure of a bunch of fine doppelbocks is quite a draw, to say the least.

Both. When I lived there during the 2001 festival, there were tents set up near Marienshilfplatz (this was during the period where the Salvatorkeller was under reconstruction after having burned down; I'm not sure if the location of things has shifted since it reopened).

But for the most part, you can find the beer around town, especially at the breweries' beer halls. And some of the local pubs have it on, too. I lived about 20 meters down the street from an Augustiner-affiliated pub (had great food too; I practically lived there) that had Maximator on. There were many nights where walking that 75 feet down the street was a challenge.

Maximator, btw, is one of the most outstanding beers I've ever had. It's similar to Andechs' Bergerbock Dunkel in that it's rather dry and doesn't have any cloying sweetness (in fact, both are fine examples of how a beer can be malty but not sweet), making it dangerously drinkable.

Forschungsbrauerei, which is ordinarily open only during warm weather, also reopens for Starkbierzeit. And, of course, Schneider rolls out the Aventinus.

It doesn't suck.

(Lived there? Coincidence, or by plan? :-)

Hmm, don't know that one. You don't mean Marienplatz in die Altstadt do you?

Cool. So it's not a festival so much as just a time of the year when the yummiest beers come out. :-)

I don't suppose you recall the name or location of that pub, just in case I get back to Munich any time soon?

I have to admit, I don't think I've had the Andechs, and the Maximator only in bottles. I don't mind sweet doppelbocks, but it's not going to stop me from trying those if I get the chance.

Don't think I know Forschungsbrauerei... Wo ist das?

I DID find a nice Schneider pub, somewhere in the area of the Hofbrauhaus IIRC. They made a pretty good kaesespaetzle and of course the beer is spectacular; I also got to try out bierschnapps there for the first time.

Is the weather sucky at that time of year though, or is it tolerable?

stv.jackson mangled his quoting while accusing me of the same and misplet a word while speaking of spelling. These are subtle signs of one who knows and respects the great traditions of usenet. You should bow down in awe.

HTH. HAND.
