Lagunitas beer

I guess that hardly makes them unique or even particularly interesting, in my eyes. There are a lot of brewers out there experimetning with many different styles. And a lot of them do a better job.

While I definitely appreciate breweries that can do multiple styles well, I'd rather have a brewery that knocks one style out of the park rather than one that does a lot of different styles without any particular distinction. And that's where I've found myself with Lagunitas.

And McDonald's sold a bajillion hamburgers, while Britney Spears sold several million albums. Appeals to popularity don't really cut it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't like Lagunitas. There's stuff I like that many others don't. I'm just saying a) that they don't work for me and b) the popular appeal is silly.

That may be true (well, it is true), but ratebeer.com and similar sites have their own skewed results. These sites attract a certain type of beer afficianado, and they tend to be quite heavily tilted in favor of big, aggressive beers, as well as certain beers of a certain level of cachet that people believe they should like. The fact that such sites' favorites are dominated by huge beers is a sign of their own shortcomings.
