Midtown NYC Help

Thanks to all who responded to my request for help on beer bars in New York City.

Can anyone now help with a good bar for food in Midtown NYC please? An average beer tap selection will do for my first night in NYC, while I get my bearings. As for food, something like hot sandwiches and burgers would be fine, nothing elaborate. I'm staying on W 42nd St near Times Square, so somewhere within easy walking distance would be great.

Thanks, Lee (Derby UK).

There are two brewpubs in midtown: the Heartland Brewery Chophouse and the Times Square Brewery. I've never eaten at TSB, but have at Heartland and the food is incredible. Check pubcrawler.com for the addresses.

I've eaten at both. I liked the food at both places, maybe the Heartland a little bit better. The beer at the Heartland is much more adventurous, with a belguim tripel and imperial stout (maybe it was an old ale) on tap last time I was there. It's definitely worhwhile, though it doesn't compare favorably to the better west coast brewpubs.

The beer at the TSB is very watery and weak. I think they had a porter which was clean, but very fizzy and lacking flavor. If the Chelsea Brewing Company is still around, I would recommend their beer over the other two. The Chelsea Brewing company is located on the Chelsea Piers (in Chelsea), which is maybe 1 1/2 to 2 miles from Times Square.

Waterfront has great eats and a fine selection on tap. It's at 540 2nd Ave (near 30th Street). Longish walk, but easy with bus or subway train.

Yup Chelsea Brewing Co. is still around, I work about a block and a half from it. Often have lunch there, and sometimes eat food. Both are great.
