I have been a fan of Moosehead since turning "Legal". Anyone ever tried their beers?. Please reply

something about the acts of fermenting a Moose's severed head disturbs me

Really? So what did you drink when you were illegal?

Yeah, I'm in Montreal, so it wasn't that long ago that they started selling their stuff here. Pretty dull and boring just like Molson and Labatt, if you ask me.

Based on your headers, I'll take a guess and say you're probably somewhere in Ontario, so why not check out some Sleeman beers? It's nothing extrodinary but definitely better than Moosehead, IMHO.

I've enjoyed Moosehead. It is a decent American style pilsner.

Their bottles are a little on the thin side (and for some unknown reason green). Before I knew any better I tried putting home brew into Moosehead empties. After I burst one during carbination in my beer closet I started learning more quickly though!

Fortunately it has been a rather pleasant education, introducing me to not only a variety of beers, but a variety of /styles/ of beer. I had consumed American pilsners for so long it never even occurred to me the tremendous variety that is out there.

So enjoy the Moosehead. But be open to trying a porter, pale ale, and maybe even a lambic now and then.

Howard - what a funny post! I had the same thing happen to me years ago when I started dabbling in home brewing! Now, of course, I only use clear bottles - and I still don't mind a few Moosies every now and then.

like lagers myself, is that a bad thing?

Oh no! Sorry if I implied that. I guess I'm just jaded by my own experience. When I was young and "trying new beers" adventurous meant trying another brand of American Pilsner, because that's what I saw on the 7-11 shelf. I was far more persuaded by marketing than I would like to admit. And of course back then, there really wasn't a lot of variety available in the US (where I grew up).

A lot of "knowledgable" beer drinkers now look with disdain on the American Pilsner. But I must admit that I like it. There's nothing like an ice cold bud on a hot summer day after mowing the lawn! So I was just trying to say: Look, there's even more! :-) My apologies if I did so in an offensive way.

My day job is a comedian. ;-)

Gawd it's a mess isn't it?!

Interesting. I went to brown bottles because of their ability to better block sunlight and thus avoid "skunk beer". But then with your own home brew, it is much easier to control the environment from brew pot to beer glass. And clear bottles would allow you to better see your beer before you opened the bottle. Hmmm.... thanks for the thought!

not the case,

I was referring to an older post where I asked about opinions on a lager from the Buzzard's Bay company, circulated out of the boston area, very good imho, just hard to find.

I had not heard of Buzzard's Bay Brewing! And I am new to this newsgroup. From their website it looks like a nice collection of beers. I live about 6 hours west of Westport, MA, but may be traveling in that direction in the next month or two. Thanks for the tip!

They make an amber and pale ale, I got a sampler pack a while back and found all to be good, but favor the lager. Enjoy!

I've got their Pale ale and Golden headed my way via BOTM club.

Well, there might be nothing "like" a Bud, but even for "lawn mower beer", I find something a bit more hoppy does the trick of being thirst quencing and helps clear the dust/pollen out of your throat. Give me a Jever or a HopDevil after (and during, too- I put a "bottle holder" on the John Deere...) I do the lawn. I also used to like to slip a 7 oz. Little King's (when I can find it fresh) in the that long thigh pocket on a pair of work/carpenter style pants- for emergencies...

I can tolerate Bud Ice, beyond that, you can have mine, in a pinch a cold Rolling Rock if you're talking cheap beer, otherwise, I'll have a sam Adam's or something enjoyable.

Small nit here, but I have to take exception to the name "American Pilsner"...there's nothing pilsner -like about these beers. A more appropriate description is "American light lager"...but I still don't care to drink them myself...
