Munich Lowenbrau

Someone posted here a while back that the recent Munich Lowenbrau sucked. I bought some yesterday and really liked it. The old Miller brewed Lowenbrau was the first "upscale beer", and I use that loosely, that I drank. It was my favorite for a few years. But I lost my taste for it when I tried Heineken. This is the first time I have drank Lowenbrau since the early 80's and was very surprised. I plan on buying more. So to each his own I guess. Hank L.

That was probably me. I don't recall saying it sucked, but I'm sure I wasn't particularly complimentary. Truth be told, it's not a bad beer. I just don't find it a particularly good beer, either, especially compared to other examples of the style.

And keep in mind my opinion is formed from having lived in Munich and having gotten ample opportunity to sample quite a bit from the six Munich breweries. None of them suck (OK, Hacker-Pschorr sucks, at least in terms of helles), but some stand out over the others.

Excellent. Never listen to a bunch of yutzes online to determine whether you want to try, or like, a beer. Too much of that goes on.

If it's coming in fresher than Spaten or Paulaner in your area, it probably is well worth buying over those. Helles is a delicate beer, and a fresher sub-par example is usually going to be better than a less-fresh "better" example.

I have lived in Munich for two years and drink it sometimes and if you get a clean beer in a clean glass at the right temperature and fizziness then it is quite palatable. The only Hell beer in munich that I avoid is Spaten but then they do Franziskaner weiss beer which is excellent.

Hacker-Pschorr Helles varies in quality. Usually it isn't great but I was drinking it one day in Munich and it was clearly better than anything else in Munich including Augustiner Helles or Edelstoff from the wood barrel. Maybe they had gotten hold of a batch of superior quality barley and I got lucky. Paulaner Helles varies similarly.
