New beers!

For me anyway, we get very few new beers around these parts (Wichita KS) so it was great that a whole new load of stuff showed up last week, I didn't buy *everything* that was new, but I did blow a wad:

Dulle Teve Bos Keun JW Lee's 2004 (they had vintages going back to 99 or 2000) Dorothy Goodbody Stout Old Engine Oil Eggenberg Ur-Bock Eggenberg Mai-Ur-Bock Hanssens Oud Kriek (!) Uerige Alt (!) Hitachino Nest White Hitachino Red Rice

I bought a couple more than that, but can't seem to remember them right now. Anyway, I was pretty excited about all the new stuff. They also had vintages of Gales Prize Old Ale going back to 99 or 2000 in addition to the Lee's Harvest Ales. I suppose I'll go back and buy 'em up and save for a couple of verticals.

Were these in the big cool-shaped bomber bottles and if so, how much were they?

Nice list!

I hope to bring some good ones home from Colorado next weekend.

No, these were the smaller bottles, I don't recall if they were 12oz,

330ml or other size but in that ballpark. Still an unusual shape for a beer bottle. They were a bit steep, maybe $3.69 or something like that for the single (my store does mix and match sixers). I got 2 mixed sixers that were $20 each, and $10 for the 750 of Hanssens Oud Kriek.

Yep, and I'm an idiot! I wrote "eggenberg" below but meant Einbecker. Don't know how that happens. Anyhow, I had the Ur-bock dunkel last night, a good one.

2 others that I didn't list: Goose Island Demolition and Reissdorf Kolsch

I've seen most of these in Missouri, but not the Uerige or Hanssens. Hopefully they'll make it to my part of Kansas! JW Lee's is a favorite of mine.

Wish I could get Hanssens for ten bucks!

Let me know what you think of the Nest White and the Red Rice. I have tried the Nest White once when it showed up, but it is only available here in large, probably 22 oz bottles and costs $8.99 a bottle. I remember it being a really nice white ale, but I wasn't blown away. Now with summer I am tempted to try them again, however at that price I am not sure that I wouldn't be buying a bottle from the same case that I tried months ago...

They were among the first ones I tried. I had tried the Nest White before actually. My first experience with it was not positive. The strong orange flavors come across a little weird. I shared my first one with a friend originally from Florida, and he said it reminded him of eating over-ripe oranges. Once that got into my head, the beer just didn't taste right. But I took an honest stab at it this time around and it wasn't as bad as I remembered it. Still that strong orange is weird. The Red Rice was also very unusual. I had a hard time trying to integrate it into my prior beer experiences. It had a body and character slightly reminiscent of wheats, but not quite. It was pretty novel, I thought. I'm not a sake drinker so I don't know if it bears any similarity. Both I consider to be decent, but I'm not likely to purchase the Nest White again. I will probably buy the Red Rice 1 or 2 more times just to get a better sense of it.

Really? Is $10 extraordinarily cheap or is it just expensive in SE PA? Maybe I should be buying it up! Of course, if I like it (and I expect I will), I will probably want to cellar some.

Picked up a bottle of the Uerige Alt last night. I was going to get a few others, but I still have a lot of beer left from a recent trip to Colorado.

Feh. A couple years back, I bought several magnums of Oude Kriek and Oude Gueuze from New Beer Distributors on the Lower East Side for $9 apiece. I think they had too much of it or something. We didn't bother to ask questions, we simply cleaned them out.

The now-in-NH friend picked up a Rodenbach Red magnum for $20 that trip, after the woman working there insisted he not pay the $25 price tag since the bottle looked old.

"it wasn't as bad as I remembered it" seems to be the perfect example of "damned by faint praise."

That it is. I'm just very on the fence with this one. I don't hate it but I sure don't like it either.
