Opinions of Troeg Desired

OK, it's time to shell out 3/4 of a day's wages (after taxes and child support payments) for a "decent" beer, as opposed to the cheap yet satisying stuff I usually buy. In my quest for this "decent beer" I came across a display of various Troegenator beers and ales. They had a "Dopple" or "Double" something, and an "Oatmeal Stout", which piqued my interest. I suppose their Oatmeal Stout is nothing like Sam Smith's, but is it anywhere close in complexity and body and mouth feel ?

How 'bout the Dopple? Worth trying ?

I'm looking for a full-bodied brew with complexity, balance of hops/ maltiness/esters. Lots of things going on, not just something to pour on my pancakes Sunday morning.

The Troeg Oat is $22.95 for a case which is pretty cheap compared to $4x.xx for SS.

Any comment son the above 2 brews, and also any other Troeg bews are much appereciated. !!

I've always enjoyed the Troegs Hopback. Crazy amounts of Hops, which is my thing.

Thanks, Leo. I am leery of any heavily hopped brew, ala Hop Devil or Weyerbacher Hops Infusion. Too bitter for me. I like a lot of hops "flavor" and "aroma" though, as in Fuggles or Cascade, which aren't very "bitter".

How is the bitterness level of the Hopback ?

I'm not a huge fan of Troegs' year-round stuff, but I think their seasonals (Troegenator, Mad Elf, and Oatmeal Stout) are great. The Troegenator isn't as malty and rich as a typical dopplebock, but is really good stuff. Friend of mine described it as a "dark maibock" and flavor-wise I think that's a reasonably interesting description. Still has a good malt character, just not quite as heavy, excellent stuff. I love the Oatmeal Stout and prefer it to Samuel Smith's, very roasty, bit smoky.

I really like both the ones you mentioned. Highly, highly advise giving them a shot.

It's more on the bitter side than the citrusy, tangy Cascades you like. Probably not your style. Try the Oatmeal Stout or if you can find it, the Nut Brown. Leo

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try the Oatmeal Stout and the Dopple.

Actually I think the oatmeal stout is quite good and has nothing to fear from Sam Smiths. My notes mention lots of roasted flavors. It scores a 93rd %ile at ratebeer, not bad.

Haven't had it, but it only gets "above average" reviews at ratebeer.

Where is this beer distributed, anyway?

Thanks, Dave

I tried the dopplebock. Not bad. It had the same "chemical / detergent" nose coming up from the pint glass, which I get in my home brews when using flavouring grains. A slight hop presence which was melded into the taste, not a separate hop taste. Some oiliness, a good thing. Smooth, silky. Molasses. Monolithic.

The Hopback is OK but Troegs Sunshine Pils is their best seasonal offering IMO.
