Pabst Blue Ribbon

I believe PBR to be America's best cheap beer (24-pk bought for $8.98 yesterday). I don't buy any of the variants like Pabst Genuine Draft, because the way the PBR label spells it out, they don't have to be as good! And in fact they aren't as drinkable.

Any other candidates for best cheap beer? I read the post for Burger Classic, but I've never seen it here in California.

Isn't that an oxymoron? $9 for 24 beers, that comes out to roughly $2 plus change a six pack. You can buy a six pack of Peter's Beer tall boys at Trader Joes for $3.99. Might cost a little bit more but at least it is palatable and won't give you a hangover from hell like PBR.

I like PBR, but prefer it on draft or in bottles. Here in Chicago, the best bargain is 30-packs of Special Export, which can be found on sale for $10.99. Special Ex is really a quality beer, formerly Heilemann's upscale version of Old Style. The brand is now owned by Pabst.

I was a big fan of Pabst when I lived in Atlanta in the early 1980s... this great bar, Ken's Tavern had the stuff on draft for 25 cents a mug! They had a great juke box, and a great mix of patrons, roofers and construction workers [my job at the time], 1980s-style punk rockers, and young novice drinkers [drinking age was 18 at that time]. They also had chilli. Great days... PBR could get you drunker than Hell, but you'd pay later... the headaches could be epic the next day... Will

I once had a beer called "Lemon Lager." The "refreshing" taste of lemon in a "quality" lager. Something like $2.99 a case. Imagine Lemon Pledge sprayed into skunky oxidized Bud. I choked down half a bottle (it was a gift). Several drunk frat boys later told me it was some of the best stuff they'd ever tasted.

Without a doubt Trader Joe's has the best deals on foreign beer that I have found lately. I picked up a six-pack of Peter's today. So far I like it better than Oranjeboom at the same price. I noticed that they also have a Dutch brand called Three Horses that I haven't tried. Maybe for the same reason that a Latin scholar shied away from the Mexican beer Dos Equis (believing the word to be equus or horse). XX beer was simply named for the twentieth century.

I noticed that TJ's also has a relatively expensive stout. $4.99 for four 12oz. of Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, I believe brewed in San Francisco. Has anyone tried it?

I haven't tried it, but have had an excellent clone brewed by a very experienced homebrewer. He says it's a great beer, hence his taking the time to copy it. It's rated very high.

That's a ridiculously low price for one of the best imperial russian stouts available. Buy a case. It will age well.

Pretty good stuff. I'm not as fond of it as many people are (too much coffee character for me), but $5 for four? Hell of a deal, go for it.

It was? I suppose then that their light lager, Tres Equis, was named for the 30th century? And how 'bout those visionary Australians with a beer called XXXX?

Another cheap beer that is my favorite to drink is Miller High Life, the Champaigne of Beers. It has a smooth taste and in my neck of the woods you can get a 6-pack on average for .50 cents a beer.

... History

In 1884, a German brewer named Wilhelm Hasse emigrated from his homeland and established Moctezuma Brewing company in Mexico. He first brewed Dos Equis Amber in 1897, blending his brewing heritage with the spirit of the Mexican tradition. More than one hundred years after Hasse founded the brewery in Mexico, Dos Equis Special Lager emerged, a new beer launched as an extension of Dos Equis.

Dos Equis, pronounced (Dohs-Eh-Keys); translates in English as "two-x's". The beer was originally named "*Siglio [sic] XX", meaning 20th century, to signify the approaching millennium. The brand carries the distinctive "XX", symbolizing a celebration of the last century, its revolutionary vision and honoring the new millennium. ...

I've had quite a few different cheap beers, and over here in Mississippi, I tend to like STROHS or SOUTHPAW. STROHS has a nice drinkable taste, much better than typical domestic Budweiser / lite or etc.
