Prima Pils notes

I have read a bit about this beer on this NG so I have been looking for it and finally found some here in San Diego. I do have some questions, though. Is thiis beer unfiltered? Reason I ask is that he bottle I purchased was cloudy. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I had a very good unfiltered pils in northern Germany, but a cloudy Pils is unusual and if unintended may ex-plain some of the "flavors" I detected. I thought the beer was quite unbalanced. The bitterness was not offset by the malt, and I generally like hoppy North German-style Pilsners. It had distinct citrusy notes, in fact it had a citrusy nose. It also had a slight medicinal qulaity to it in the palate. I am thinking I got a bad batch but want some confirmation before I write thiis beer off.

You got a bad batch. Definitely no medicinal character in good Prima. Usually no haze, either.

Prima Pils, in the grand tradition of good pilsners, doesn't age well. Victory now puts a very legible date on the front of the label of their beers, stamped in white ink with letters about 1/8" and they've been doing it for about a year now, I'd say (maybe less...any one recall?).

I just passed on some Prima 'cause it read "Enjoy By Sept. 23 03" (which is a bit more commital than "Best By" I'd say). I try to get it with AT LEAST 2 months to go. (Got some HopDevil instead, with a EB of Christmas, '03 instead).

If your Prima DIDN'T have the date on the front (they used to use that hard to read stamp on the bottle itself, near the shoulder) it's WAY out of date. Hopefully they AREN'T following the lead of some micros who conveniently neglect to date bottles for certain distributors who are just too happy to sell you (via the equally uncaring retailer) old beer.

That would explain the "secondary fermentation" that occured the next day...
