2 great ones in Portland for July....I'll most likely will attend both of them.
In July, he might also want to skip Portland. The OBF is, IMO, one of the most over-rated festivals in the nation. Only one beer per brewery, and oftentimes that one beer is whatever that brewery's ubiquitious beer is. (Ooooh, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale! I can't get that anywhere. And BridgePort IPA is soooo hard to find around Portland, but it's here! Score!)
The frat-boy factor doesn't help.
I've had better beer-drinking experiences just pub crawling Portland than OBF. OBF may have been the shit back in the day, but it's been resting on its laurels way too long while many, many other festivals have passed it by in both breadth and depth.

I wonder as well why some breweries bring their flagship beer that you can find almost anywhere. However, as far as "experience" goes, I love that waterfront location in the middle of summer. Lots of activity in and around the area, and you can take the MAX train there so you don't have to drive. The OBF is a great festival IMO, even without the beer.
As far as pub crawling goes, I have had the pleasure to visit the new Roots Organic Brewery and Amnesia Brewing on a couple of occassions. Both are great places. While Roots may need to tweak their beers a little, Amnesia is already there. Can hardly wait for Clinton St. to open.
No idea. I could maybe see a marketing effect but, c'mon: how many new drinkers are SNPA and BridgePort IPA going to attract at the OBF?
That is true. It is a great location, and my couple trips to PDX in the summer have featured damn nice weather.
