San Francisco Beer

Hi, I'm visiting San Francisco next month, staying at the Radisson, Fisherman's Wharf. Looking for recommended brewpubs and beer bars. I'm especially interested in beers from California or adjoining states. Street names would be helpful please. I'm planning to visit the Steelhead and Magnolia brewpubs while I'm there. Any comments on those would be useful.

Thanks, Lee Derby UK.

Are you going to rent a car, or limited to public transportation? If the later, there's still Bay Area Rapid Transit:

....and other rapid transit. I'd stick with rail and taxis, as the buses anywhere but in SF and the East Bay (from Berkeley down to Hayward) are far and few between.

Here's a website of CA brewpubs and microbreweries:

My recommendations are:

Drake's Brewing in San Leandro (across the Bay. BART) Their IPA is great. Hit the map link to see a good map of the greater San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA).

There are some good brewpubs in Berkeley, too. (BART) Bison, Pyramid, etc. See the brew100.com page.

Visit Anchor Brewing in SF.

Pick up some Hoptown IPA (22 oz. bottles), my favorite IPA, to keep your whistle wet back at the hotel. It can be found at the SF Beverages and More (Bevmo) liquor store along with a whole buncha more microbrew offerings. They have a huge beer selection. BTW, in CA beer and alcohol can be purchased anytime, except between 2am and 7am, providing you can find a place open for business.

I'd stay away from Gordon Biersch, but that's just me. I think their beer is pretty mediocre.

Between the brew100.com page and the BART link, that should keep you pretty busy.

Have a good time! :)
