Sips: Chicago brew full of body

Sips: Chicago brew full of body

India Pale Ale is one of the most popular beer styles in the country these days.

There is no shortage of great examples of them in the Midwest. One of the best is Chicago's Goose Island IPA ($6.99 a six-pack).

It has a bit of complexity in the flavor that stands out among so many one-dimensional versions of the style.

Of course, it's also nice that we get it fresher, instead of beers that make the long trip from the West Coast. Goose Island IPA is a nice golden beer with recognizably American hops (citrusy, piney and slightly flowery) and has more body than the average IPA. Give it a good pour to raise a nice head, and you'll be rewarded with a more drinkable beer.

That's the reason IPA existed in the first place, so it could travel a long distance without spoiling. Go for the West Coast stuff instead.

Sounds too much like spam than a drinker's honest opinion.

I'll still take Christian Moerlein OTR (Over the Rhein) Ale. Even though brewed in Wilkes Barre, it typifies a great old Cincinnati style ale and is far more worth seeking out than the Goose IPA.

Both are good beers, but the Moerlein OTR (no Christian in the brand name) is truely exceptional.
