Starobrno?

Hey

Maybe you can help me here with one of my favourite beers: Starobrno! It's a Czech beer but i can only speak English and German so i have no idea how to pronounce it.

greetings.. ..Markus

Good question... I just start mumbling after I get the "Star" part out...

Pretty much like it's spelled. Star-o-burr-no, except the "burr" part would be pronounced shorter than the equivalent English word. I'd have to look at a label again to see if there are any diacrictial marks on there (Czech has a billion) that would modify the pronounciation of any of the sounds, but as I recall there are none.

You're pretty close, but from what little Czech I've picked up, I know that the "o" is often more like an English-language "ah." Thus, "Star-ah-bur-nah." But hell, what works in its native country won't make much sense to folks speaking English or German, so it makes more sense to pronounce it like you've shown. Starobrno is also sold in Austria, and that's about how they pronounce it there.

No diacriticals to mess it up either. The "Staro" part just means "Old," while Brno is where it's brewed - "Old Brno." Analagous to a name like "Old Milwaukee," I suppose, except that the stuff from an old brewery in Moravia's main city is far more appealing.

Oh, Guess

No diacritics in this name. The 'o' is similar to an 'a' as in english 'ball', or a german 'o' like in "Hose".
