Thomas Hardy Ale

I had a bottle of the Thomas Hardy's Ale last night for the first time. I've been enjoying some big beers this season and it seemed like something to try.

It's definintely impressive but I'm glad I only bought one bottle. Half of the bottle might have even been enough.

It was the most recent incarnation, so as far as I can tell, "Phoenix bought the recipe and the brand rights and pay O'Hanlon's brewery in Devon to produce a yearly batch."

Of course that's from two seconds on google...

Tell me about it.

Of course, after the first half a glass it became a bit easier to drink. ;-)

I still have 3 bottles of the 2003. I opened one about 6 months or so ago and it was doing nicely as far as aging goes. Great stuff.

Tried it - didn't like it! Didn't like Tess of the Derbyfield either

How do you feel about the various vintages of JW Lees?

Btw, we all don't like the same beers and that's OK. ;^)

I haven't tried anything from the new brewer, but when it was brewed by Eldridge Pope, Thomas Hardy was pretty much undrinkable when young. It needed at least 3-5 years, whereupon it transformed into something quite good, and evolved into something quite wonderful as time went by.

If it's brewed to the same recipe these days, it probably would be a good idea to cellar the bottles for a few years rather than popping them open fresh.
