None of the above.

Falls City (in Louisville, KY) brewed it, tho' they might have used the 'dba' of Drummond Brothers, since they had a beer by that name. IIRC, a few other brewers did it, too, off hand I'm thinking Utica Club/West End/Matts for the East Coast...slight pause will I check some reference material...Pearl did it for the South and Cold Springs for the mid-West.

You want a list of names? Actually, by the amount of full cans that still turn up in garage sales and on eBay, it's safe to say, in many cases, "not even the people who bought it."

It was an odd little fad, but, at the time, most beer aficionados figured "If it helps a small brewery stay in business, good enough."

One of the odder beer writers from the era, James D. Robertson, who wrote about beers as if they were birds (i.e., "Such and such Lager has been known to appear in Western New York State...") and who's book was actually criticized in an issue of Brewers Digest (he gave different "ratings" for the same beer sold under different names, etc), wrote that all 4 versions of Billy were different (makes sense, I suppose, the just put their standard light lager in the can) and gave the hightest rating for Cold Spring's. I remember the stuff from West End tasted a bit better than Utica Club, but, who knows...

I guess brewing a good beer wasn't enough for the brewery.

Well, unfortunately, no. A list of the best selling beers in the US and a list of the closed breweries or beers that no longer exist should prove that.
