We Tried It: BarrelHouse's RedLegg Ale - Cin Weekly

We Tried It: BarrelHouse's RedLegg Ale BERYL LOVE | CIN WEEKLY EDITOR WE TRIED: A growler of RedLegg ($10; $8 if you bring your own jug)

WHAT IT IS: Local brewer BarrelHouse pays homage to the Cincinnati Reds with this full-bodied amber ale. The term "growler" hearkens back to the good old days, when you could bring your own jug or bucket to the local brewery and get it filled with your favorite swill - "Fill up my growler, old chap!" In the case of the BarrelHouse, you're looking at a half-gallon.

WHY WE TRIED IT: Not too long ago, I mentioned in our "Staff Question of the Week" feature that one of my favorite beers is RedLegg. And since BarrelHouse closed its brew pub, I wondered out loud if any place still had it on tap. Turns out plenty of bars in the downtown area do, and you can buy it directly from the BarrelHouse guys at their new brewery. Then, like manna from heaven, BarrelHouse brewer Brian Sprance dropped off a growler for us to try. In about a month, BarrelHouse hopes to have its lineup of beers distributed at retail outlets.

GUT REACTION: Hey, it's my favorite beer - on tap. Will it be any good out of the jug?

SEVERAL DRINKS LATER: A malty delight with one of the cleanest finishes of any amber ale I've ever had. Think Killian's Red but WAY smoother.

WHERE TO GET IT: If you can't wait until it's in the stores, head to the source. BarrelHouse Brewing Company, 544B West Liberty St., West End. Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

FINAL VERDICT: Try this - it's delicious
