Westmalle Tripel

My brother who lives in Belgium visited for Thanksgiving and brought over a few bottles of Westmalle Tripel for me. Amazing beer, very tasty. This is a departure from my usual way hoppy or deep stouts that I usually drink. Besides Westmalle, can you recommend other tasty Tripels or beer styles that are similar to this? Thanks, Leo

Depends on where you're at. IMO, the finest tripel in the world is Allagash Tripel, from Maine. It's reasonably available around the East Coast, not sure if it's around in your area. For Belgians, Tripel Karmeliet is phenomenal, probably my second fave. Unibroue's La Fin du Monde is good as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have tried:

Unibroue La Fin Du Monde New Belgium Trippel Victory Golden Monkey

Looking forward to trying: Allagash Tripel, from Maine Tripel Karmeliet

Totally enjoyed them all. The only slight complaint would be I can only have two or maybe three with that kicking high alcohol content (although it'a a *lot* of fun) Would a dubbel be less in alcohol but similar taste? Thanks. Leo

Lower alcohol, but completely different taste. Dubbels are brown ales. Guess you'll just have to suffer the tripel's higher abv . . .

Witbiers are a completely different beast than tripels, but, if you like spicy Belgian ales, give them a shot. Not as strong and certainly won't taste the same, but if you like the spice character of a tripel you can at least find some of it in a wit (which will have a much lower abv). Hooegarden is pretty readily available stuff.

Thanks, I'll give Hooegarden a try. Leo
