Wild Goose

Does anyone know what happened to Wild Goose?

It was being brewed at Frederick Brewing in Maryland. In the past couple of months it became harder and harder to find any and it seems like I bought the last case of IPA in Cecil County, MD. First the Porter dissappeared, then the IPA and now I can't even find the Amber :-(

I've heard that Frederick is having some real problems, cash-wise. Could just be spiteful rumor, but maybe not: other brands have been disappearing, too.

Hey John ,

I own a bar in NJ, back in June, I had a promo night for Wild Goose beers. The day of the promo my wholesaler called and said that the Wild Goose Truck had still not shone up. According to my wholesaler Frederick had said the truck was on its way every day that week. We made a last second change to another brewery for my promo night. I still have not gotten any beer from them. My wholesaler said that Frederick claims no problems ,still no beer.

The same brewery also manufatures another brand (I can't rember its name) which I can get locally in Baltmore. And recently I waited for several weeks to get a case of the Amber Lager that they kept promising every week. The local beer store kept blaming the county distributors but now I wonder if that's the case.

It does show Frederick Brewing still making Blue Ridge.

I just called Frederick and the operator also claimed no problem with Wild Goose and that it's still being made. They directed me to someone in sales, but I got voice mail. Will keep the group up to date what I find out.

Doh! Didn't care for much of their stuff at all, but tended to enjoy Snow Goose. Apparently I won't be enjoying it any longer. --

Just curious, what kind of beer do you enjoy? I started with the Wild Goose Amber when I first moved to Maryland because it tasted similar to Dock Street Amber. Then fell in love with the IPA and Porter. In the winter we always kept a case of their Oatmeal Stout around.

I called Frederick this morning and the operator says, yes they still make Wild Goose. I'm waiting for a call from sales to find out what's going on. The Snow Goose may yet be flying.

Well, I enjoy well-made beer, and tended to find Wild Goose's usual fare to be pretty underwhelming. Their IPA, compared to Hop Devil, 60 Minute IPA, or any number of other IPAs just didn't have that much character, just wasn't very interesting. Anything labeled "Amber" I suspect from the start, and, for Oatmeal Stouts available on the East Coast, Troegs make a simply beautiful one. It's not like their beer was bad, it just wasn't particularly good. I'd drink it if nothing else was around, but I generally make it a point to have something else around.

Well, the operator may be being told that, but it's not like they're going to announce they're finished to someone calling up. I wouldn't be surprised if they're in serious financial straights and are trying to come up with financing or something. Just because they say it's OK doesn't mean that it necessarily is.

disappearing,

Hey Lew, is Frederick the contracted (bottling) brewer of the Brooklyn line? TIA.

I'm not Lew (for which Lew and I are both grateful, 'cause that means twice as many of us to drink good beer), but the answer is "Nuh-uh." Brooklyn's bottled beers are made at F.X. Matt in upstate N.Y. Lew, please corroborate (or not) that I've got this one right.

Oh, Guess

Come on, ask a New Yorker. Lew doesn't know anything about New York beer.

All the bottled product comes from F.X. Matt. No bottling in Brooklyn or contracted elsewhere.

Some kegs are also produced in Utica exclusively -- Lager and Brown I'm certain of, and Pilsner I'm fairly certain of, dunno about others.

Or, to quote Lew, "All bottled beers brewed at Matt's in Utica under contract and Brooklyn's supervision. Some draft is brewed at Matt's."

Thanks for the info. I don't know but the last batch of Brooklyn Lager I got didn't have quite the punch that I remember from prior batches.

Hehe....under blank's supervision. What I'd like to know is where are the "supervisors" when Labatts is turning out Guinness Extra Stout? I know, they're all at the pub drinking Storm King/Zonker/Expedition/Shakesperean.

OK.....which beers did Frederick bottle for other micro breweries? I know there had to be one that I've bought online because IIRC, I asked the question and the answer I got was Fredericks. The hard part is filling in the blanks. :^(

a tad old?

IIRC this lager is dry-hopped, and a bit of age can take the all the punch out of dry-hopping.

Good point but no. IIRC, the best before date was Jan 2004. I like how Brooklyn does a good job in "notching" the months on their labels.

hey Bill,

I believe Frederick's makes Blue Ridge, Wild Goose, forget the name of the brewery from Baltimore they made a stone beer and a barlywine I think it was called Big Beer had a wax top. the brewery was purchased about the same time Frederick's purchased Wild Goose. they also make a beer from Cleveland cannot remember the name they own that one also. The last I heard they were doing the bottling for Stoudts also.
