I know it's not real ale, but does anyone know why 440ml beer cans became a standard in the UK?
Why not 500ml, which is standard across Europe, and more nearly approximates to a pint?

It is just under one USA pint thus allowing for a small head in a US pint glass, why we use it however I do not know.
We should go for an Australian "pint" - 600ml. OK dream on I guess.

But beer in the US is usually sold in 12 oz bottles; or in 12 oz or 22 oz glasses.

Yes, but in general - going back 25 years or more - they superseded 275 ml or half-pint cans.
