Beer without gluten

As a suferer of coeliac disease I can't eat/drink anything that contains gluten. Barley does, so this means I can not drink beer! Does anyone know if any gluten free beers exist? with brewers using something else? and importantly, do they taste good!!?

There was a discussion of gluten-free beers on the forum of www.beer- pages.com. You might want to check that out.

I seem to remember the general conclusion was that a few exist but they aren't all that wonderful. Better than nothing, I suppose though.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi, Here in Austria I've recently discovered gluten-free beer called "Beer up". It's available in some supermarkets and comes only in 0.3 cl bottles as far as I know. I quite like it's taste. It is made by the brewery "Grieskirchen". That's about all I know about it. HTH !

Cheers, Stefan

It's a popular misconception that barley contains 'gluten' and that coeliacs cannot drink beer.

The Oulton brewery produces a gluten-free (or at least very low-gluten) ale, which I tried last year.

Was it any good?

It was interesting, and slightly strange.

'Twas a pale, hoppy, floral best bitter IIRC. But there was something 'odd' about the flavour that I just couldn't put my finger on.

Not sure this was due to the lack of gluten, however, as I've found other products from the same brewery to be a little weird.

I am not a Doctor but have done internet research on Gluten in Beer, for suffers of coeliac disease I believe that the jury is still out on wether beer should be excluded from a gluten free diet. I suspect that the medical community thinking goes something along these lines: Barley contains Gluten, Beer is made from Barley, therefore Beer contains Gluten. I am posting the following link that gives more infomation, that suggests that at this time we simply don't know if enough gluten survives the brewing process to be present in ammounts to cause problems for coeliacs.

My suggestion would be to discuss this with your dietician and possibly consider that a limited ammount of beer is OK for some coeliacs.

I found this in the coeliac society newsletter

Has anyone tried this? I clicked on the link but there didn't seem to be anything about the beer on the brewery website! If this is a proper british beer and not 'largery' then I will be very happy!

But the barley is malted converting all the content into sugar, perhaps gluten is only present in barley in its unmalted state ?

My wife was recently diagnosed with a gluten intolerance, and promptly gave up beer. I did discover a gluten free beer called "La Messagere", brewed in Saint Paulin, Quebec that we can get here in Ontario (not much help to those of you over the pond). It's brewed with rice and buckwheat. I actually found it quite refreshing. Very light in colour and body, well hopped, with a bit of tang to it - reminiscent of a Hoegarden on a hot, summer day!

Greens produce 3 different gluten free beers and I understand a British Brewery is now producing one.

I was handed an anonymous glass of Green's a few months back. I spat it out immeadiately thinking it was something contaminated with line cleaner. Friends had a right chuckle.

Subsequent attempts to taste it have also produced an involuntary "this mustn't go anyware near my body" reaction.

Foul.

That must mean your body has a natural gluten-free intolerance, then? :~) cheers, MikeMcG.
