CAMRA's Southern beer bias

This is from a publication called Innspeak, based in West Yorkshire

"CAMRA's Southern beer bias

As if to underline the southern bias of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) visitors to this year's BBC Good Food Show will be able to learn about the wonders of real ale and sample a host of regional brews.

The consumer group will be offering the so called Great British Beer Experience at the event at the NEC Birmingham from November 26-30 but, from the list of 15 regional brews put together by CAMRA only two are from North of Watford and there are no examples from Yorkshire.

Nik Antona, CAMRA regional director for West Midlands said "An event of such magnitude and reputation provides the perfect environment for people to learn a little more about real ale and its importance within our national culture. With such a regional spread of samplings on offer in the tasting theatre, we hope to show visitors the importance of their LOCAL brew in relation to the growth in cask ale sales at the moment"

I do hope this is not true. If it is, then shame on CAMRA.

The list I saw had indeed 15 beers but they were said to be "A few of the beers featured in CAMRA's Great British Beer Experience", so presumably there were others, which may or may not have been acceptable to the good people of West Yorkshire. Did anyone on this ng attend?

Innspeak is a local pub paper in West Yorkshire.

I've read the story too - it was on the front page of the last edition I saw, a few days ago.

Its a free paper, originally started by the Halifax Courier under the name Pubspeak distributed to pubs in Calderdale, Kirklees Littleborough (Greater Manchester) and parts of Bradford (Queensbuty Thornton Cleckheaton etc but not Keighley as far as I know).

Most of the pubs get about 10 copies - it covers various pub related topics with quite a good coverage of Real Ale - a column by Barry Pepper for example.

It changed from Pubspeak to Innspeak in July last year when the Halifax Courier group decided not to bother with it any more and John Grey the editor decided to continue with it as an independent publication. It was weekly under the Courier but now comes out every 3 weeks or so., I presume it is purely funded by the advertising. It is printed at the same place - namely the Yorkshire Post building in Leeds.

We seem remarkably well served by this sort of thing because we also get one called the Pub Paper which is local to Sowerby Bridges and restricted to Calderdale only.

These are in addition to Tyke Taverner , Calder Cask and the other Camra mags that seem to arrive periodically

Pity they don't check their facts but the most annoying aspect is that there is no mention on the aim of the event is to promote cask beer to an audience that generally prefers wine.

It was a very succesful event as far as promoting beer...

All the beers were well received and a lot of new CAMRA members were signed up.

The tutored tastings were all full to capacity and a lot of beer books were sold.

A lot of people who don't normally attend beer festivals made very positive comments given the chance to try a range of beer styles.

The Good Food Show is still a relatively "foreign" market as far as most brewers are concerned but things are turning round.

Perhaps M. Platting would care to encourage some from Gods own county to attend next year?
