I suspect there isn't a good rule for this. Moving sideways to distilled beer, at an oddbins wine fair I was amused by parties of females going to a United distillers stand and getting the you are all girlies and will probably like something mild and slightly sweet, try this sales pitch. A good proportion of them said, yes, that's nice, but I preferred the whisky over there, pointing to the Ardbeg stand. Now, fine whisky that Ardbeg is, steriotypically it would be seen as a butch drink to put hairs on mens chests...........

Mmmmmm Ardbeggggg

I share you appreciation of Ardbeg. I have a bottle of 26 year old waiting for the right occasion! I'd recommend the distillery as well. Really friendly people and a great restaurant. A few yards up the road you've got Lagavulin and Laphroaig as well.

Islay ales are now brewing on the island so the island of Islay is even more attractive.

I think if I were going again, I'd stop in Port Charlotte as the hotel was the best on the island when I visited a few years ago.

Stayed on the island two years ago as part of a Northern Ireland - Islay - Northern Ireland - Isle of Man sailing tour.

Stopped in Port Ellen - unfortunately it was the low point of the trip. Reminded me of parts of Ireland twenty year ago - boarded up hotels - a meal in a restaurant that probably came straight out of a packet.

Didn't rate Islay Ales too well - the stuff in the pub was OK ish, and we bought a selection of bottles from the local shop for consumption on the boat. They ranged from quite good to very poor.

Managed an Ardbeg tour though and really enjoyed it. Was tempted to buy a bottle of the 'Very Young' however the tour guide mentioned that it was significantly cheaper in mainland outlets (Oddbins I believe)

I was introduced to the latter by my neighbour a couple of years ago - we both rated it highly. He's just rewarded me with a bottle of CASK STRENGTH Laphroaig 55.7% for keeping an eye on their house and fish whilst on holiday.

Tried it at the weekend - a blend of Castrol R engine oil - Chloraseptic and 100% polish spirit. Absolutely magnificent !

Whereas I, as a woman, think Ardbeg very acceptable though I slightly prefer Talisker.

Exactly. A friend brought me a selection pack all that way, but I wasn't particularly impressed and thought thry might be new to bottled beer production.

Oh, yesssss
