Does CAMRA attract women by patronising them?

For the last couple of years CAMRA has tried to promote real ale to (young) women with these campaigns;

2001 - Images of a naked woman. 2002 - Hale Ninkasi - images of a semi naked woman. 2003 - Real Ale In Vogue - Madonna drinks real ale, so should you! Are these too patronising to have a snowflakes chance in hell?

Surely you have noticed by now the tendency of Usenet discussions to veer off on unexpected tangents.

And the irresistibility of one-line asides.

It's not a debating society.

Not round here it wasn't. A considerable quantity of these posters have disappeared from the ladies at our little festival for the last couple of years. Possibly a small campaigning hit we think.

Yup, could it be patronising to think that women don't like a bit of beefcake / eye candy ? :o>

Commenting on the original point, assuming you are a man, how do you know for sure that women resent the aforementioned bits of campaigning as patronising ?? Or is it the way you, as a man, think women should react to it ?

As to women in the organisation, there's already quite a lot, including in the national executive, and at many key positions within the GBBF working party (although the current head organiser is a guy, the two persons leading the ship before him were ladies). And yes, they are fully recognised for their competence and efficiency, not just taken on board to keep quotas. One of them'll probably be back 'round these parts pretty soon, BTW.

Therefore I feel the issue you're trying to discuss is very much a quetion of hollow principles and hot air, whch does not verify much in real life.

Cheers !

Perhaps if you were more receptive to "all forms of lifestyle based advertising" looking in the mirror wouldn't be so disheartening.

I was one of a band of femaleists (for want of a better word) who thought that the Hop Lady was quite sexy...

and the Hop Man needn't have bothered!

Thanks. So many people get really worked up about these things and end up producing non-constructive comments. I presume you think that the small sections on pages 2 and 4 would have been more usefully combined into one item on page two with the Fem-Ale item from page 56 facing the combined introduction by sitting on page 5?

Anyone want to chip in with other comments?

Font size? Fonts used for particular bits? general layout? Amount of detail in the floor plan? Other items with no connection to the programme: Members lounge, family room, beers on offer, floor layout, seating, entertainment, games, non-CAMRA stands?

Speak up and they can be put on the list for discussion. Various members of the working party read this group - you don't normally see them commenting though for a variety of reasons. So speak up, they are ' listening' , but not if it's an incoherent rant.

I can imagine... these are my views... and I'll try and be constructive!

Personally I would;

- leave the "Welcome" on page 2, as is.

- combine the "Where to Start" and "Fem-Ale" into one item on page 4, targeted at anyone who hasn't been before. Shouldn't be a novel... no ones going to read it when theres a hall full of beer...something conscise to get the points and suggestions across.

Also another small point, the live events time table... would be good to have a time... esp with crowd pulling acts like Otway and the Hamsters (They were surperb!). Ok, so there was a chalk board by the side of the stage.. but it was almost behind the pa.. and I didn't notice it until I had been standing next to it for 5 minutes!

I don't think you could fit much more on the plan as it is, if more detail is required then I think new pages would have to be found for the West / National halls, which would be confusing (how many people know which hall is which?)

The beer was good... didn't have a bad half during the 2 sessions I did. Saturday seemed to be different from the past few years... normally the regional bars run out, and the brewery bars are still going... this year it was a bit more even.. which was good (apart from a couple of regional bars... L & S (I think) can understand Bar L running out.. it's the one everyone goes to when thet arrive!

The temperature was not bad considering the hall is affectively a big greenhouse.. except perhaps the West Hall, which has a lower roof, and seems to have less air con.... but was still ok compared to the temp outside.

I'm sure I missed out a few thoughts... but overall... it was a fantasic festival yet again... and my thanks to the people who did all the hard work.

Regards Mark

Arrghh! I was really hoping to get to both Croppers and Cambridge this year, but couldn't get the time off, and in the end was lucky to get two nights at GBBF.

Find a tree. Face the bark with the most moss on it. Extend your right arm - you're pointing to the West.

If you are not sure which is your right arm, find the West Hall...

Watching the sun - you can't get away from it in that damm hall!

The main entry is on the east side of the building. That, and the sun is easy to spot through the roof.
