First attempt at Making Cider...

Hi all,

This newsgroup seemed like a good place to share our experiences so far

- today we have been having our first crack at making cider from the old apple tree at the foot of our garden.

We took photos throughout the day - feel free to visit the URL below to look at pics...

Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Don't use mucky fence posts for crushing?

I dare say a metal frame a couple of clean boards and a car jack might be a tad better. (Jack and boards inside the frame to squeeze the apples which would be in a clean sheet.)

Why did you wash the apples and why were you throwing away the rotten bits or those full of protein? As you have sanitised your crop so well you may have to resort to the old trick of using a bit of raw meat (traditionally the dead rat found lying around) to start the process working.

Don't forget that to make real traditional cider you need to add the artificial sweetener and the day-glow yellow colouring.
