National beer guide Wasdale Head and Blue Anchor

Both dropped this year.

Wasdale Head Inn, Cumbria I know the reasons here, long term manager retired for personal reasons, owner made poor appointment, micro brewery departs, beer not paid for etc

Anybody been in during the last few months, are things looking up or down?

Blue Anchor, Helston I thought this was a fixture. Has it just been given a rest or are there problems?

Oh dear, Mike. That sounds bad. I used to go there often during my youth. I shall ask around a few mates who still live there to see what is going on.

Was that where John Burton Race used to be? - he was at the New Angel in Dartmouth when we visited recently. Didn't make much of it - mainly because it was very expensive. OTOH, the French tea-shop just round the corner was a breath of fresh air.

Oh dear. that's a shame. It was always a great place to go and dump your walking boots in the hallway, along with everyone else's before entering the bar. I don't suppose that has happened for a very long time but am willing to stand corrected.

I wonder what made me think that? I have just read his cv on the net and you are correct.

Not manager - the owners lease it.

My Wasdale mole told me that the leaseholders has had bailiffs in and new ones were going to be in soon, but then said the existing ones refused to go.

No later news but I will ask Moley!!

Thanks for that Chris. My friend in Whitehaven didn't know anything about it and I couldn't contact another friend in Kirkland.

current practice seems to be leave boots on for public bar, leave in hall for hotel etc.

A publican friend tells me that the brewery chain which owns the pub he leases, uses every renewal of it as an opportunity to tighten the screws. The more successful he is, the more confident they are that he won't walk away from the years of graft and sweat that made it so.

All the big chains are like that. Some are worse than others but many of them are now getting their comeuppance.
