Paper Makers Arms, Tovil, Maidstone

I just discovered the P&DJ Goacher website

and note that their original tied house (around the corner and up Tovil Hill from the brewery) is not listed as carrying their beers. Does anybody know what happened to this pub?

I had my first pint in England in the other (perhaps only) Goachers tied house - The Rifle Volunteers on Wyatt Street, but that was back in '91 when it was a Sheps house (and a great pint of SNMBB they served, too).

According to the ever-handy Quaffale

formatting link
"Goachers - Two pubs are owned:

Royal Paper Mill, Tovil, Maidstone Rifle Volunteers, Wyatt Street, Maidstone."

Could the Paper Mill have been renamed? (although a google search suggests that 2 'papery' pubs existed in Maidstone - see

- "Papermaking Pubs - Two illustrations of public houses with names connected to papermaking in Maidstone, Kent - The Papermakers Arms and The Royal Paper Mill."

Elsewhere, read a bit about the name here -

though, all that said, the fact that Goacher's own website seems to have no mention of Tovil or either paper pub is a bit of a worry . . .

Any Man or Woman of Kent / Kentish Man or Woman care to help? cheers MikeMcG (whose early drinking & first brewing job were in Kent)
