Preston Pubs

Hi, Apart from the GBG-listed pubs, are there any I shouldn't miss on a day's drinking in the city centre? Recommendations welcome.

Thanks, Lee.

Preston's current CAMRA Pub of The Year isn't in the current GBG as it only opened last February (2006). It's the Bitter Suite and is located just off Fylde Road opposite the Student Union building about 5 mins walk away from the centre and is run by the ex-licence of the New Britannia. 6 ales which are normally Goose Eye Biter Suite, which is a brewery/house rebadge of Bronte Bitter, and 5 guests which come from anywhere. Still opens more traditional pub hours of 12-3, 6-11 during the week 12-late Saturday and currently only Sunday evening I believe. It's a little hard to find the first time as it's tucked behind another pub (Mad Ferret, students!) but when approaching the centre it's just down a cobbled drive next to a large sign for a martial arts centre.

The Old Vic, formerly the Victoria and Station on Fishergate virtually opposite the railway station also isn't in the current GBG and I'd expect it to be in the new one. A few big brewer standards and micro guests in here.

If you can find transport there (it is way out in the country), I would recommend the Top Lock in Heapy/Wheelton. 9 hand pumps with 7 bitters, one mild and one that is either a stout, or a porter. It also has 2 very drinkable ciders. Ruby Tuesday and Thatchers rough cider

This pub is on the side of the Leeds Liverpool canal, between Preston and Chorley.

Stagecoach routes 123 and 124 (Blackburn/Chorley) pass through Wheelton.

10 minute walk from the main road. Hardly central Preston though!

If there, also try the Dressers Arms: 5 guests plus beer brewed for them by Pictish (Big Franks?).
