Same locale, mid-year, mid-day: Visit rural post office, look round corner of counter... ...into bar.

Post counter lady: "Sorry sir the bar is closed for another hour, would you be after having a drink while you're waiting?" :-)

He said it was straight out of the comic sketch lexicon.

I've heard that one too. Maybe it's a rural myth?

The afternoon closings were a pain and there were various workarounds.

In some jurisdictions, farmers traveling between one job site and another were entitled to have a drink at the pub, even during afternoon closing hours.

Markets (both in London and Birmingham that I know of had early opening, early being 5 or 6am) always tended to have a back door route to the pub.

Simple solution for ordinary drinkers, walk into the market veer off (right in the case of Birmingham) and enter the pub through that door.
