Sheffield

I'm not sure whether it's Sheffield or Huddersfield that gets my vote for beer capital of the North of England.

I visited Sheffield last Sunday. We did the usual route - the Wellington (formerly the Cask and Cutler), the Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern, The Harlequin, The Devonshire Cat and others. Not a bad pint in sight and excellent food at the Fat Cat, and a wonderful Sunday roast at the Devonshire Cat.

I tend to think that Huddersfield has the edge. Slightly more pubs with a slightly better choice at slightly lower prices (generally), and all within walking distance of the railway station.

Is this the Gardner's Rest down Neepsend Lane? I remember them being devastated by the floods seems like years ago now. How are they getting on?

With the exception of the beer garden all up and running. Very shiny and new. Beer excellent.

There's a handy bus along that side that links the Harrlequin, The Gardeners and (after a short walk) the Hillsborough. As we had two disabled pass holders with us it came in useful.

That wil be the 53 from Ecclesfield to Bradway that goes down Neepsend Lane.

However note that there are two Number 53 bus routes! The other one goes from Sheffield to Mansfield

It's a long way from the days of the "People's Republic of South Yourkshire" with fares at 10p and 2p. :-(

First fiddled with the terminus of the 41 at Halfway so that it no longer uses the purpose built off the road stop at the Stagecoach operated tram terminus. So I no longer get their bus to the tram from my Mum's house. I walk!

Too right - lets get on the City Clipper and ride round all day for tuppence! I lived in Sheffield back in the 70s and the buses were great then - and I think they worked to a degree as I don't remember a terrible lot of congestion - as it was easier (and cheaper) to get a bus than to try & drive - I especially liked to catch the last bus out of town which used to do the run at about 60mph so the driver could get off home.

I don't know either Sheffield or Huddersfield but Stockport should be considered too. I worked there for 8 months in 2008 / 2009 and could have gone on exploring the pubs for several more weeks.
