Sheffield

Just had a wonderful day doing the 'Sheffield Crawl'. A news item that I haven't picked up on elsewhere, but make a huge difference to your itinerary.

Both Hillsborough Hotel and Fat Cat now open all day.

Pardon my ignorance but what comprises the 'Sheffield Crawl' (should I ever find myself there!)?

Cheers, Graham.

Well the above two. Kelham Island Tavern round the corner from the Fat Cat. Riverside and Harlequin not far away from the above 2 Hillsborough Barrack tavern and Gardners Rest.( later near tram stop) Not forgetting Queens Head at the bus station. Those are just for starters there are others and 'one' that should NO longer be in the good book but that becomes a personal observation.

I hope you're not referring to the excellent Cask and Cutler, by Shalesmoor tram stop, which is missing from your list?

Interesting you should say that Mike, as I was hearing 'whispers' en route last week. I have never had a problem there myself and it probably remains in my UK Top 20. But I don't get there that often and as I said on last post, it is about to change hands.

After Sheffield, it's about time I did the Pennine Rail Trail again!

Similar to Manchester Northern Quarter, where there's a cluster of top class pubs some distance outside of city centre. Rather than compete, such pubs complement i.e. you might not make a long journey for one pub, but the whole package is a big attraction and well worth the journey. Judging by the number of beer enthusiasts I saw on a November Wednesday, 'beer tourism' is certainly a significant earner for Sheffield. I should add that a number of the pubs are what I describe as real local pubs, unspoilt by 'brands' or interior designers!

Just what constitutes the crawl no doubt depends on individual taste or whim on the day. Catch a tram to Shalesmoor and Cask & Cutler, Fat Cat and Kelham Island Tavern are all nearby. I could forget the crawl and spend all day in just one of those! Then Riverside, Gardener's Rest, Hillsborough Hotel and New Barrack Tavern are not far, although you could hop on a tram another stop or two. Those are GBG entries but there are other 'locals' in the area worth checking out. Do research in advance though as some pubs are hardly where you expect them to be, down back streets of old industrial estates and you need to know where you are going.

Before your train home, you could call in at Bath Hotel and Devonshire Cat which are nearer centre.

By the way, the owner of Cask & Cutler leaves soon, although I'm told new owner will not change things. I'll miss the pub cat and dog though!

has a copy of local CAMRA newsletter, although not latest. Some pubs have adverts and there is an advert too for the local CAMRA guide that covers all of Sheffield.

Thanks, David. I'll check that out with a friend who drinks there several times a week. I know about the change of hands, btw. Well-earned retirement for Neil and Sheila, methinks, and the new boss is no stranger to the pub and its ways (lager sales discouraged, no sparklers in use, etc.). I suppose it'll mean the end of the Port Mahon brewery, though.

Well, you missed our winter beer festival, but the pubs along the line are all worth a visit.

A good starting point in the crawl on Quaffale

not exhaustive, but covers what many consider to be the best.

Good! Now please tell me which pub you are referring to. The Ship, maybe? (In which case, I'll totally agree with you).

Not the ship. The pub is in the city centre though. not too far from Bus and rail station.

Would some kind person please pass on my congratulations to Neil and Sheila on a well-deserved retirement? I helped them set the pub up - in fact, I helped drive them around the competitors to see what they should be doing that would give them the "wow" factor, even before they opened - and it's good to see that they have found a kindred spirit to pass the pub on to. (any chance of a name there please?)

I heard that the old owners of the Cask & Cutler are taking the brewery to France.

Well, here's this evening's feedback:

there's absolutely nothing wrong with the beer quality, as ever. Neil and Sheila will be leaving some time after Christmas, so you've still time to pop up there and congratulate them personally.

The new guy's name is Richard. I don't think I know him, but he used to drink there regularly, used to deliver beer for microbreweries, and apparently has a pub in ?Worcester?

Great and sorry for questioning this! Serves me right for half listening to a 'CAMRA Bore' who seemingly is banned from Cask & Cutler or has exiled himself. One of those sad people who knows everything about pub trade and talks very loudly to whole pub, but nobody in particular, about how a pub should be run and landlord of the pub he is in has it all wrong. I was more concerned watching him fill in the CAMRA survey forms when he was in no fit state to hold a pen. On reflection, he would NOT be welcome at all in such a superbly managed pub as Cask & Cutler. He wasn't a Sheffield local by the way, but 'drinks there regularly'. Probably banned from every pub in his home town!

And used to be my ex-husband's business partner in that beer agency! Deep joy - I'm glad it's in the safest of safe hands!
