Brew pubs near UCLA?

We'll be taking my Daughter down for orientation in July and will have a few day around there and I'd love a recommendation of someplace to go for lunch. We don't know the area! and my wife isn't a beer fan but does enjoy good brew pubs (Like Serria Nevada's in Chico)

Nels There, something else to post about for a while

Congrats!

There is the Westwood Brewing Co. Southeast part of Westwood. This used to be good place, beer-wise - I hear they've slipped a bit. There is also a BJs in Westwood. Good pizza and good beers. The stout is quite good IMO. They don't brew at this location, but you could call it a brewpub if you want.

Both would be easy walking distance from UCLA. In fact...if you're parked, don't unpark. Your daughter will be spending a lot of time in Westwood Village (it's basically there for the college kids), and a walk through/around is probably not a bad idea.

I'd recommend a visit to Santa Monica if for no other reason than it is the closest beach to Yewkla (and I'll bet this matters to your daughter). No brewpubs (well, not anymore...), but a couple of good spots: Father's Office and Library Alehouse. Father's Office is always packed. The beer selection is very well-chosen and you will be able to find a variety of local beers. One of the top three taphouses in the LA area and the burgers and sandwiches are excellent too. I'm always disappointed with the beer selection at Library Alehouse, but you will find the odd local beer or two, the food is good, and it tends to be less busy than FO.

Brewpubs...Not too many in the area. You'll have to range to Pasadena (Gordon Biersch, Crown City) or the South Bay (Red Car, Redondo Beach Brewing Co., Manhattan Beach Brewing, Co., Alpine Village/California Brewing Co (a German-themed Old World kinda place, they make a very good dunkel)).

The RBBC and MBBC (sister pubs) are completely forgettable and frankly not worth your time. If driving a bit doesn't bother you, I'd either head for Pasadena or Red Car or Alpine Village or the Belmont Brewing Co. in Long Beach.

A trip to Pasadena would make for a nice half day. The Huntington Library (gardens) and many other things to do there. Hot and smoggy in July, though.

You're welcome. Email me directly and I'll give you my mobile number. As it happens, I'm out of town for about half of July. But if it works out and you'd like, I can show you folks around.

BTW, did your daughter qualify for the dorms? I didn't (lived too close) and I'll just NEVER get over that...

Shw wanted a double but she is in one of the triples with private bath and air conditioning and we got her the 19 meal, meal plan with roll over.

There's Madisons Bar & Grill, Maloney's on Campus and the Westwood Brewing Company in Westwood. The link will take you to a page listing the restaurants in Westwood Village. Napa Valley Grille is also wonderful for a nice meal and a martini. There's also the wonderfully serene surroundings of the cafe in the Armand Hammer museum. People really forget about going to the museum for lunch, which makes it a nice escape from the crowds. The W Hotel restaurants always seem to have lively crowds and good beverages.

There are so many options in Westwood. Have a great stay!
