Burton Baton DFH

An oak aged imperial india pale ale, some beer geeks may love what they may theorize as the subtle interplay betwixt a highgravity uber ipa and the side show oak flavor; However they would be propogating a fallacy in that the beer so aptly named burton baton, whacks the end user over the head killing the delightful Intense Bitterness (Read Counterbalance to Intense maltiness), leaving the poor taster with the impression that he is feasting upon a dry desert of balsawood and medicinal alcohol. This woody taste/malty texture completely Batons the pleasing bittering counterbalance one woood expect from an ipa much less an IMPERIAL IPA. OK folks please leave oak where it belongs , in wine and bourbon, and maybe congac.I did however enjoy the 10%abv.

There are those who have described Dogfish's occasional experiments as either ecstasy or a train wreck in a bottle. I tend to remember the positive ones (Midas Touch, 90-Minute, World-Wide Stout well-aged), and try to forget the train wrecks.

Mind you, I've had--and even made--some superlative oak-aged beers. So do not rush to judgment based strictly on Burton Baton.

Just popped a three year old 120-Minute the other day. It ages well. The overabudance of bitterness and the cloying sweetness have both disappeared and it's become a very enjoyable drink with balance leaning to the malt side.

I liked it enough to grab a dozen bottles from the 2005 batch that was just released.

So... You don't care for it?

I have to admit, I've liked most to all of the experiments, at least of the ones I've had (I THINK I've missed only Festina Lente and maybe one other), with only the Liquor De Malt disappointing me (not a HUGE fan of Midas Touch, but it's interesting)...

But I haven't tried this yet, so I'll reserve judgement for now.

"Lew Brys>> Allagash Curieux is a shitfest of a liquid abortion and all

I'll tell you, I didn't think it was that great either, but I don't hold that kind of animosity toward it!

Bit of a visceral reaction to that one. I'm not a fan of most barrel- aged beers, but when I think "hey, I want this to taste a bit like wood or bourbon", "tripel" is not exactly the style that jumps to mind. IMO, it's the best tripel in the world, and it was a stinking travesty to do that to that beer.

Hmmm. Is anyone in the middle on this one or it it one of those beers that provokes a love it or hate it reaction.

As far as it being the best tripel in the world, well, I think the tripel that Moortgat brews under the name Maredsous would give it a run in a side by side test, but I agree to the point that it's definitely one of the best on the planet.

I've only had the Maredsous once, but was pretty underwhelmed. Reasonably certain I may have gotten a bad bottle at the time.

I'd give the closest runner-up to Tripel Karmeliet.

yeah i couldn't stand the festina lente, the bottle i got was completely flat. The Aprihop i didn't like either. I am a little biased i guess when it comes to interfering with hops.
