Preserving Guinness on draft at home?!

Hey all,

Just coming to the end of my first keg of Guinness at home. However, wasn't really able to finish the whole thing before it went bad. It seems you get about 90 days of freshness for Guinness as the keg sits in the fridge. So, a few questions. TIA for any ideas:

- Will the beer (Guinness) grow mold INSIDE the keg as it sits in the fridge at any point? I'm curious since that beer sure will grow mold fast anywhere else.

- Is there any way to otherwise make the beer last a bit longer?

- Is Guinness available in anything other than a 13+gallon keg?

- Is there any way to keep the draft faucet clear of deposits? In addition to mold I notice buildup of what appears to be dried beer sludge from time to time.

- Do you really need to clean all beer lines on a kegerator at least once a week? I'm starting to think this is a necessity between the the kegerators I have going.

If you can't finish a keg of Guinness in less than 90 days, you're not much of a Guinness drinker.

Unscrew the spout and let it soak in water when not in use. I have found a small rubber "foot" (such as you'd put on then bottom of a table or chair leg) at the hardware store which fits nicely over the threaded portion that is exposed when the spout is removed. Keep it covered.

I clean my lines every keg but then I finish mine in >90 days.

No. Jax, FL. Too bad:) It would be nice to work out a 1/2 and 1/2 deal with someone locally!

Vaxman. Thanks for the tips. I'll try those out.

Yup, it sure helps. I have bought kegs myself, but more often go into one with a couple other members of my homebrew club. With US half-barrels, it works out to one 5-gallon cornie keg each, with enough left over to each have a pint or so while transfering into the cornies. You do have to have a bit extra hardware to do the transfer, but it's not too bad.
