Westvleteren

Here is where I get to enjoy a lot of my favorites without the 8+ travel hours:

I know quite some people from OBER - but not you, it seems. So we will meet. Cheers, Joris

Quality over quantity, my friend.

Yeah, the Westy's a bit dear in price in the States. I wouldn't buy it every day, but it's definitely worth the occasional splurge. I just wish it were out here in LA. At least I can get Rochefort.

Not sure of the mechanics of the distribution. Suffice to say, they're probably getting a bit more than two cases if they're going to ship it overseas.

We have several Belgians who post here regularly. Anyone know if Westvleteren has liberalized and expanded their distribution?

The St. Bernardus 12 is only $6.30 for a 750ml bottle here in Madison, WI. I had the St. Bernardus 8 on draught in Amsterdam a year ago, and it was wonderfully fruity and yeasty, but when I had the 12 on draught in Milwaukee a few months ago it wasn't as satisfying. I had the 12 yesterday from bottle and I can't say I enjoyed it that much either. The hops were big, but not all that enchanting, and there was not a lot else going on. I'll have to try the 8 again in the big bottle!

Their website now says the limit is 10 cases.

Where did you find that small, but so interesting and brand new info ? The exact URL please !

BTW: Westvleteren Trappist is only sold to individual customers. Every customer promises not to sell the beer to others. One can drink the beer in the meeting centre 'De Vrede', in front of the abbey. In this room visitors are informed about the brewery and the brewing process.

Yeah, can't find that info on the site at all! I was almost starting to organize a bigger car for my next trip...

i know about Gouden Carolus not being trappist. was talking about favourite beers in general. last time i was in Belgium i gave Mechelen a miss, then later i discovered GC tripel. Mechelen is on my itinerary now! :)

btw, i quite like Bierkoning in Ams [was there a few weeks ago and picked up my first Einbecker Ur Bock].

my boyfriend likes strong stuff too, occasionally we have Bush and other

13%. i like so many i can always go back and drink the old favourites again and still love it. my first Orval was a bit strange...but i'm learning to like it more and more.

anyone else like lambic? oh god, i know i know.......''it's a girrrrrrl's beer", right?! hehehe......my current lambic fav is Timmerman's gueze. i find many too sweet, especially kriek. i don't have a sweet tooth.

check out my beer album see if there's anything you like

a few months ago, dining with a couple of friends, we had both Westy 12 and Roch 10 - the drinks that night included also my friend's barleywine, maybe some other beers, a good local Nebbiolo wine (BTW we are in Italy) and a selection of aged single malts whiskies... a good way to get prepared to a HB judging the day after ;-)) Well back to the trappists: my friend was for the W12, his wife preferred the R10, I was in between; but the interesting thing was that we all 3 agreed that anyway R10 is *bigger". Yes, despite whay I read and what I remembered, Rochfort 10 is *more*: in aroma, flavour, intensity, complexity... a challenge to your palate! W12 was also rich, big, complex etc, but subtler and more drinkable. That evening, having drunk so much and so "big", if I wanted another bottle it would have been Westy and not Rochefort.

In other tastings, in other evenings, Rochefort 10 was just heavenly perfect, the right beer for me.

If you have the chance, I do suggest a parallel tasting of these 2 great trappist ales.

BTW, Rochefort 10 is stronger (though just slightly) than Westvleteren

  1. R10 is 11.3% abv, W12 lately oscillates between 10.2% and 10.8%. A friend measured the final gravity of a W12 and we calculated an OG of about 1095.

Is that really still the policy, Filip, or are people ignoring it? Because I have purchased more than a few bottles of Westvleteren from retail stores and pubs in the States.

Good girl. Got a sister? :-)

If you prefer a gueze over a kriek, I think you don't have to worry about the "girl's beer" thing very much...

Have you tried the Lindeman's Cuvee Rene Gueze? I need to retry that some day, but if you like gueze you'll probably like that one just fine.

I really do, as the icing on the cake after an evening of Belgian imbibing. Even after rounds of Piraats and Val Dieus and St. Bernards, a late lambic is the kiss on the cheek.

Indeed. Thingofitis, I've yet to have a Westy that didn't taste like it had been mishandled and sitting on a warm shelf or in a hot container for some time before it got to me. The Bernardus stuff is flying off the shelves these days.

Seems a trip to Belgium is in order to do some proper investigation.
