A little OT: Whiskey making

I was wanting to try my hand at making whiskey and or bourbon. Does anyone have any info on this? Is it legal to distil and if not, can one get a permit from the BOTAFA ?

I know this is not re beer, but if someone has any info that is useful, I'd be most grateful. Thanks

There are other newsgroups better equipped to answer your question.

In the US, distilling alcohol is illegal without a "distilled spirits plant" license. A quick Google search led me to believe such a license is difficult and expensive to acquire and keep.

As for my personal opinion, even aside from legality: Making good beer takes weeks or months, while making good whiskey would take years or decades. I don't want to wait for years for a drink. If I want whiskey, I'll buy it. A bottle isn't all that expensive.

Thank you sir. I will check out the sites and I appreciate you taking the time to look. I was kind of hoping for someone with personal knowledge to give me for purely academic purposes you understand. Again Thanks

I can never remember if I am suppose to top or bottom post. Sorry.

I thank you for your time in answering my question. I truly do not mean to be argumentative but aside from legality here is my take. I've got a crippled right hand ( I'm right handed ) from an accident. I'm not complaining or asking for sympathy - just stating a fact. Just about anything I buy is better then anything I'll ever make. I'll spend $15 to make a picture frame that I could get at the dollar store ( and not as nice as the dollar store frame.) However, I've found that (( and this is for me only - I don't claim to speak for anyone else)) the pleasure is in the trying and doing. I am not what I would call a "drinker." I couldn't tell you the last time I've had a drink of ETOH, and it has been many years longer then that since I have finished a glass of wine or bottle of beer. However, I have made several wines - just to see if I can. I've not yet got around to beer, but I may. So, yes, I completely agree with you. I could buy a bottle of beer or whiskey, quicker then I could make it and cheaper then I could make it. But the point is, it is not something "I" made. Sorry if I made this too deep. And I'm not trying to argue - It drives me crazy when people ask for advice and then argue when it is offered.

But, I'll keep you in mind for when I start making my Beer.
