Exploding Kegs?

OK, I'm new to kegging, I kegged my first batch of beer about a week ago. Since my bedroom is the coolest room in the house, that's where i'm storing it while it conditions. I did the "big bottle" treatment, 2/3 cup of sugar (It's a pony keg btw) to prime. I put just a little over 6 gallons in it. After about 5 hours i pushed on the ball & it already had decent pressure to push some beer up through it.

I've had bottles explode on me before but they were in the laundry room & no one got hurt, this thing is sitting next to my bed...i'm paranoid...can a keg explode like a bottle? I know SS vs. glass, big difference, but hey i've heard of weirder things happening. That would probably be the fastest way to get the beer into me though.

If you've ever done the "dry ice & water in a soda bottle" trick, you would know why I'm paranoid...that little soda bottle exploded like a stick of dynamite, the one I did cracked the vinyl siding on my house.

Can you imagine what that would be like? Maybe I should call Mythbusters & have them test this theory.

Where are you? I've just started getting into Mythbusters this year.

The pressure release valve should release before the keg explodes. If you can afford it, force carbonation using carbon dioxide goes pretty well.

Hey Josh,

I'm on the US South East Coast, Mythbusters is AWESOME!!! Believe it or not, i'm looking at their website now & there's a lot of discussion about exploding beer kegs. Neat.

I'm not sure if US Sanke kegs have a pressure relief, unless maybe the ball/seal/thingy is designed to pop if there is excessive pressure. I just don't want to have to explain to my wife when she gets back why our room smells like beer & why there's a hole in the ceiling.

As far as CO2...not sure if I want to take the $$ plunge for a full system, I actually made this batch & another one for a buddies party in a few weeks & am going to borrow a couple Pony Pumps to dispense it.
